There’s a glaring paradox regarding the Trump administration’s stance on EV adoption. On the one hand, Republicans scrapped electric vehicle tax incentives, scaled back on charging infrastructure programs, and adopted more lenient emissions standards. But then there is the other side of the coin, which has to do with the ongoing US – Iran conflict.

Unrest in the Middle East is taking an increasingly heavy toll on fuel prices, and it seems unlikely that hostilities will cease very soon. Meanwhile, diesel climbed way above $6 at the pump and the national average for regular gasoline currently sits at just over $4.30. As you would expect, these prices are leading more and more people to consider going electric.

More Than Half Of Americans Are Now Interested In EVs, Study Says

According to a recent study carried out by Here Technologies in collaboration with SBD Automotive, as many as 56% of American drivers are now thinking about buying an electric car. The data is based on a survey with more than 4,000 participants, performed annually to gauge EV market trends and rates of adoption. Just one year ago, the numbers told a very different story.

US customers ranked as some of the most EV-resistant globally in 2025, with only 10% of ICE vehicle owners being open to the idea of their next car being electric. At the same time, 57% of them said they would likely stick to gas-powered vehicles moving forward. This year’s findings swayed heavily in electric vehicles’ favor, highlighting a massive shift in public opinion sparked by skyrocketing fuel prices.

What Else Can We Learn From This Survey?

The same Here–SBD study shows yet another data point in favor of EVs, this time related to the charging infrastructure. Just 28% of drivers felt confident about the number of available charging stations in 2025, but that number jumped to 47% this year. Additionally, 85% of EV owners think the infrastructure currently in place is adequate for their needs.

So, as it turns out, electric vehicles may see renewed interest from potential buyers after last year’s steep decline, which isn’t too much of a surprise given the situation we’re in. And this trend is only going to grow if gas prices don’t go back to normal soon, even as a large proportion of car owners still find EVs too expensive at this time.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

It’s almost comical how the US government waged war on EV adoption, only to then encourage it involuntarily once a different, more literal kind of war erupted in the Middle East. But what isn’t so funny is the financial burden high fuel prices are putting on American bank accounts at a time when Uncle Sam was already dealing with a serious cost-of-living crisis.

And in this economic climate, it makes perfect sense that people will start looking for cheaper alternatives to fulfill their transportation needs. That’s exactly what we’re witnessing at the moment in the form of car owners opening up to EVs, and we may see a huge surge in demand for new and used electrics in the future if the Iran conflict continues for much longer.
