Turn a credit card on edge and imagine something two-thirds of its thickness. That tiny measurement represents how far Toyota was willing to go when making it easier for its 2027 GR86 to brake hard and turn into a corner. Toyota’s goal was to widen the chamfer on the shift interlock by just 0.5 mm, to make the fifth-to-fourth downshift smoother on the open road. It didn’t add any extra horsepower to the new GR86 or make any wholesale changes elsewhere. But it did spend engineering time on those minute measurements, to make its affordable sports car feel just right.
Toyota Changed Half A Millimeter Because Drivers Might Actually Feel It

Toyota’s GR86 has already been successful in the marketplace, so when the manufacturer was looking at a 2027 model year update, it faced interesting questions about how to proceed. Some other manufacturers might have decided to unleash extra horses or perhaps add a new turbocharger, but Toyota resisted those temptations. Instead, the 2027 GR86 will feature the same naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer, still producing 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and the base manual version will still weigh in at just 2,811 lbs.
Behind the scenes, Toyota’s Japanese engineers have been looking at how the GR86 transitions from heavy braking to turn-in and decided that they needed to make some changes to the manual transmission shift interlock. This is where they decided to add 0.5 mm to broaden the chamfer in pursuit of real refinement. The engineers believed that the system’s mechanical interaction could feel better and duly made alterations to the setup.
Such a tiny change may seem ridiculous to some when viewed in isolation. However, Toyota nevertheless thinks that drivers will feel the effect of their work every time they brake for a bend, push the clutch in, and pull the lever back towards fourth.
From a marketing point of view, it would have been easier for Toyota to extract some additional horsepower to use as valuable press release bullets, while a larger touchscreen might photograph better. After all, it’s very difficult to champion a shift interlock chamfer, as this is something that most owners never get to see as it simply disappears inside the transmission. But it’s nevertheless important to remember that this car’s manual gearbox is part and parcel of the car’s appeal. This is why Toyota still offers it on both the GR86 and GR86 Premium, and that analog interaction is fundamental to what this car is supposed to deliver.
The Throttle And Steering Tell The Same Story

As part of their detail-oriented work, Toyota engineers also decided to revise the GR86’s throttle calibration. With this work, they were looking for a smoother, more linear relationship between the accelerator input and the act of acceleration. Toyota believes that drivers would like some extra control when exiting corners or driving over low-friction surfaces, like snow-covered or wet roads. And a more accurately calibrated throttle translates to finer control of the torque that’s already there, seeing as Toyota hasn’t provided any more torque with this update.
Meanwhile, over in Japan, Toyota’s domestic GR86 gets an even more revealing and dynamic update. The company has recalibrated the electric power steering using knowledge gained from racing the GR86 in Japan’s Super Taikyu series. Apparently, the car’s predecessor suffered from steering wobble in high-speed corners and over rough surfaces, and the new control strategy should reduce that, helping a driver to more precisely trace their intended line. This seems to be an example of Toyota using its motorsport experience to improve what reaches the driver’s hands rather than simply chase another headline power figure.
US drivers may not get to see the result of Toyota’s EPS calibration, as there is no sign, at the moment, of it joining the throttle and transmission revisions for the US-bound 2027 GR86. But that Japanese change is nevertheless significant because it shows the lengths to which Gazoo Racing engineers will go when helping Toyota refine its models.
Low Weight Still Matters More Than Big Power

In the broader marketplace, a sports car that only has 228 hp to its name doesn’t sound particularly ferocious. But when you consider that the GR86 only weighs 2,811lbs in its manual base mode, that number starts to look rather less troublesome. And as a total package, the 2027 GR86 is still impressive. Its 228 hp goes to the rear wheels and a Torsen limited-slip differential remains part of the package. If buyers want more chassis capability, they can always add the Performance Package with Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes.
The 2.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-four delivers peak torque at 3,700 rpm, and the car can get to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds for the six-speed manual or 6.6 seconds for the six-speed automatic.
Still, some may wonder why Toyota decided to freeze the horsepower of the GR86 for 2027. The company hasn’t given a direct answer to that question, but it hasn’t always resisted the idea of more horsepower. After all, when the second-generation GR86 arrived for 2022, Toyota had increased its engine size from 2.0 to 2.4 liters. That boosted horsepower from 205 to 228, and torque jumped from 156 to 184 lb-ft as well. So, Toyota has been willing to give the GR86 substantial performance upgrades in the past, even if its 2027 approach seems to suggest a different strategy. Perhaps the Gazoo Racing engineers think that other parts of the car are more deserving of their attention at this stage of the car’s development.
A $31,500 Sports Car Doesn’t Have To Win The Horsepower Wars

Toyota seems very clear about its direct competition in the marketplace, and this may make the value proposition of the GR86 quite apparent. The company lists the 2027 GR86 at a base MSRP of $31,500, and the Premium begins at $34,400. Meanwhile, a 2027 Nissan Z starts at $44,480, making 400 hp from its 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, and a 2026 Ford Mustang GT has a 480 hp naturally aspirated V8, its own standard six-speed manual and an almost-$48k price tag. Both the Z and the Mustang GT could comprehensively outgun the GR86 in any horsepower comparison, but there again, the GR86 is not really looking for a fight with those guys.
Instead, a better comparison involves a 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is closer to the GR86 in both philosophy and price. A Miata Sport starts at just $30,430, comes with 181 hp as standard with a six-speed stick, and weighs only 2,366 lbs. with that stick in place.
The Subaru BRZ, which is the GR86’s closest relative, also represents an interesting comparison. Subaru did eliminate the entry-level Premium trim for the 2026 model year, and its 2027 lineup now begins with the Limited at $36,140. But this car follows a familiar recipe, including a 228 hp, 2.4-liter boxer, rear-wheel drive, and a standard manual transmission, even as it enters the marketplace above the GR86 Premium’s $34,400 base price.
So, when looking at the American market for affordable sports cars under $35,000 before destination, the GR86 and the Miata come into focus. Both are purpose-built rear-wheel-drive sports cars with naturally aspirated engines and manual transmissions. And once you start looking for substantially more horsepower, the cost does climb quickly, giving Toyota’s 228 hp a lot more credibility in this context.
Toyota Isn’t Freezing The GR86 In The Past

While many of the changes to the 2027 GR86 may be mechanical and very precise, the model does get several visible changes. For example, Thunder joins the North American exterior palette as a new solid grey. Premium models also get an optional Cockpit Red interior treatment combining black Ultrasuede with red leather accents. Several cabin switches and controls get low-reflectivity cast-iron black treatment as well.
Toyota has also upgraded some of the safety technology, almost doubling the recognition range of existing stereo camera systems to improve detection of vehicles ahead when cruise control is on. A separate camera expands the system’s ability to recognize nearby objects at intersections.
And this means that Toyota is making changes, but some of them are by definition invisible. The Gazoo Racing team is directing the engineering efforts that affect the actual driving experience, with a throttle that now responds differently and a piece inside the manual gearbox that has a different shape. The engine still makes 228 hp, but Toyota is clearly saying that a sports car doesn’t always need another big dollop of horsepower every time a new iteration appears. And while half a millimeter might not transform the GR86 for many people, certain drivers may still feel the result when they tackle a fourth gear corner.
