Toyota’s First Wagon-SUV Rides Like A Lexus Luxury Sedan, And Only Costs $10,000

“It’s a wagon! It’s an SUV! It’s… What is that thing?” was all the press could muster when Toyota revealed the Ft-SX concept at the 2005 North American International Auto Show. Styled at the company’s Newport Beach, California-based design center, Toyota was teasing a new idea that blended sedan comfort with SUV utility.

Four years later, that concept became reality. The 2009 Venza was a quasi-crossover station wagon that wasn’t all Camry and not all Highlander. It set itself apart as a premium vehicle within Toyota’s lineup, offering luxury and practicality to owners not seeking out a Lexus badge. Today, the Crown Signia takes its place as the wagon-esque crossover, but even with its $44,690 base MSRP, a heavily discounted used Venza seems like a better move.

Where The Venza Sat In Toyota’s Lineup

While Toyota was taking the Venza from concept to reality, Nissan had launched the Rogue for 2007 and positioned the Murano as a near-luxury premium vehicle. Ford was also introducing the original egg-shaped 2007 Edge as a crossover between the Escape and Explorer. Toyota knew this new segment of vehicles was on the rise, but it needed extra time to put some finishing touches on the Venza.

Finally appearing in late 2008 for the 2009 model year, Toyota unleashed the Venza in the United States and Canada. The Venza’s roof was 6 inches taller than the Camry’s and 6 inches shorter than the Highlander’s, dimensions that cemented the vehicle’s place between the two models. Its price, on the other hand, was some $200 more than the base MSRP of a Highlander.

Toyota’s marketing manager at the time of the Venza’s launch, Tim Morrison, said it was 70% car and 30% SUV, which reflected the vehicle’s purpose. The Venza drove like a luxury sedan and sat higher off the road. It returned both the comfortable, familiar dynamics sedan owners expect and the utility of an SUV with its wagon-like body style.

The reason the Venza garnered so much attention for being wagon-like was its low-slung, sleek proportions, which, compared to other two-row crossovers, were clearly related to its sedan counterparts. The Camry underpinnings helped. Plus, some Venza-specific parts, such as rear MacPherson struts, the AWD system, and snazzy 20-inch wheels, set it apart from the Camry in all the right ways. Toyota was unbothered by the Venza’s public perception as more wagon-like than not, which, if it made the Venza more familiar than not to consumers, was going to help rather than hurt its sales.

2009-2015 Venza: Engines, Options, And Prices

From 2009-2011, the Venza was offered in four distinct flavors: FWD, AWD, V6 FWD, and V6 AWD. The first pair of models came standard with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 182 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Both FWD and AWD variants had an estimated 23 combined MPG, with V6 models only getting one MPG worse. The V6 FWD and AWD models used a 3.5-liter V6 making 268 hp and 256 lb-ft of torque.

Cloth seats are standard on the base Venza FWD, with higher trims having leather-appointed interiors, but many of the Venza’s features came standard across the entire lineup. Creature comforts include a six-disk CD changer, keyless entry, push-button ignition, dual-zone climate control, and reclining split-folding rear seats. Add-ons available on higher trims included two JBL audio systems, a DVD navigation system, and a second-row entertainment system.

Starting with the 2012 model year, the Venza aligned itself with Toyota’s corporate naming structure. Trim levels consisted of LE, XLE, and Limited, each with their own claims to fame. The LE boasts the same standard safety features across the entire range, available power lift gate and rear camera, and could be optioned with both AWD and the 3.5-liter V6. The XLE, aside from having all the stated additions of the LE as standard, has heated leather seats, standard remote smart-key access, an available navigation system, and comes packing either the four-cylinder or V6. The Limited is V6-only and gets all the standard features, plus a center infotainment system with navigation and a JBL premium audio system.

No powertrain updates were made between the models, but some minor exterior features were altered to distinguish early 2009-2011 models from later 2012-2015 examples. Average list prices for early models are around $10,000, while later models with high miles go for $11,000-$12,000. Low-mileage examples (75,000 or lower) have asking prices closer to $20,000, but we wouldn’t call the Venza a future classic, so don’t expect mint-condition models to hold their value or appreciate in the years to come. The 2.7-liter four-cylinder has received some criticism for oil consumption over the years but nothing catastrophic, and both the 2.7- and 3.5-liter powerplants use timing chains, which Toyota says should last the life of the vehicle.

Why We’d Choose The Venza Over Others For $10,000

In 2026, $10,000 can get you a lot of car for the money if you know where the deals hide. Even though the Venza is an orphaned model in the sense that it wasn’t followed up by another generation five years after the last 2015 models were sold. However, many of the Venza’s mechanical components and underpinnings are shared with other Toyota vehicles, which means parts are plentiful and repair costs are relatively low when the bill comes due.

Its luxury pretensions certainly shine for the price, especially when older vehicles with higher miles and fewer standard features are available for the same price. The features that helped the Venza stand out when new are certainly the same calling cards it uses to lure in buyers on the used market today. Toyota’s wagon/crossover provides enough luxury and utility that might make others from the brand feel like a waste of $10,000.

A used Corolla with the same mileage would only be better for fuel savings. A Camry would sit lower to the ground and have more difficult ingress and egress if that’s a priority for customers. The Venza is the perfect middle ground between sedan dynamics and SUV practicality. These are factors that all crossovers claim to live up to, but Toyota was the one to capitalize on aligning the Venza smack in the middle of two things the automaker excels at building.

The Venza also rides on the Toyota K platform, which also underpinned the Lexus RX and ES of the same period. These are the two mainstream cars with a ride quality equal to cars costing at least six figures, and the Venza inhereted those qualities.

    What Happened To The Venza?

After a few-year hiatus, the second-generation Venza debuted as a 2021 model. The new vehicle was a hybrid-only crossover priced above the RAV4. It had a more limited use case due to its tighter cargo area and smaller trunk opening. The Lexus-like dynamics and comfort across all trims were noticeably more refined than the RAV4, but buyers who saw that price wanted more space than features.

Older models that packed a V6 could be equipped with a factory tow package that included a heavy-duty alternator, oil cooler, and larger radiator fan to support an extra 1,000 pounds of towing, for a 3,500-pound tow rating. Later models came with advisory notices recommending that owners not tow with their Venza, limiting their extracurricular activities to whatever could be hauled with its “activity mount,” which had a 110-pound carrying capacity.

The Venza would be replaced by the Crown Signia, part of Toyota’s efforts to incorporate premium vehicles into the brand and designate them with the “Crown” prefix. The Crown Signia takes the original Venza’s wagon shape and the previous-generation’s hybrid powertrain to offer the best combination of what two distinctly different Venzas brought to the table.
