Toyota Supports its Commitment With $500k Donation
We have added quotes from experts at Toyota and a relevant technical college to support the automaker’s commitment to its community and customers.
If you’ve been paying attention to dealer inventory and monthly sales numbers, you may have noticed that the usually popular Toyota RAV4 hasn’t been selling too well so far this year. That’s not because it’s a bad SUV – in fact, it’s a tidy improvement from its predecessor – but rather because the automaker’s factories in Canada and Japan haven’t been able to build enough of them to satisfy consumer demand. But not to worry, because the company’s largest factory in the world, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, has officially begun production of the 2026 RAV4.

Dealer Shortages Nationwide
Toyota acknowledges that its dealerships have had a hard time maintaining enough stock of the RAV4 to keep up with demand. In fact, according to Automotive News, the automaker has been suggesting its retailers direct some of the fervor for the new model toward other hybrid offerings like the smaller Corolla Cross and the larger Crown Signia SUVs. Still, customers continue to snap up every RAV4 they can, with only about 967 unsold examples nationwide – covering a network of 1,237 dealers. Less than one RAV4 per location is a staggering statistic, especially when that number was more than 16 times higher this time last year.

The result for some customers has been a transaction price that’s higher than the one on the sticker, with some dealers adding nearly $5,000 in markups to the evergreen sport ute. Part of the reason for the slim supply is the 2026 RAV4’s new hybrid-only powertrain strategy, echoing the Camry and Sienna. Before, electrified RAV4s only accounted for about 50 percent of the SUV’s sales, and it’s possible that supply issues for the high-voltage hybrid battery could be affecting overall sales rollout.

Luckily, Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, could help soothe some of the RAV4’s problems. The facility has made the production changeover to the 2026 model, and it should add 40,000 units’ worth of supply before the end of this year. Next year, that number could be as high as 60,000, according to Automotive News, but that said, the majority of RAV4 SUVs sold in America will continue to come from Toyota’s plant in Ontario, Canada. Still, the roughly 6,700 vehicles that Kentucky produces each month should have a positive impact on dealer supply.

Building a vehicle that becomes a worldwide sales success is far from an easy task, but Toyota nailed the brief with its compact off-roader.
Kentucky production can’t come soon enough. As of last month, sales numbers for the RAV4 were down 40 percent year-to-date than they were in 2025. The automaker’s suggestion that its dealers redirect consumer interest toward other vehicles paid off somewhat, however. So far this year, Camry sales are up 14 percent, while the Corolla Cross is about 20 percent more popular than it was last year. The Crown Signia, meanwhile, enjoyed a 65 percent uptick in sales in the month of May, while the 4Runner sold a whopping 122 percent more vehicles last month than it did in May 2025.
“Making our customers smile by delivering high-quality vehicles like the all-new RAV4 Hybrid has been our legacy for 40 years. The milestones we celebrate today reflect our team’s commitment to sustainability and our unwavering promise to continue to deliver vehicles our customers love.”

In addition to beginning RAV4 production in Kentucky, Toyota has promised to continue its support of local technicians and workforce development in the area by giving a generous half-million-dollar donation to the Bluegrass Community and Technical College to help build a new regional workforce training facility. This move supports Kentucky locals, and ensures Toyota will have a steady stream of new talent. Here’s what the Chancellor and CEO of BCTC has to say:
“Toyota’s investment reflects a deep commitment to our community and its future. The regional workforce training center is critical for preparing Central Kentucky’s workforce for today’s advanced manufacturing environment and the evolving challenges of the future. Through customized skills training we are creating more opportunities for career growth and strengthening the workforce that powers our region.”
– Dr. Greg Feeney, Chancellor and CEO, BCTC
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
The RAV4 is easily Toyota’s most popular model. In 2025, it accounted for nearly one in five vehicles the automaker sold in the US, and it’s the only single nameplate to actually outsell the Ford F-150 pickup – the Blue Oval claims its bestselling status on the combined totals of all F-Series trucks. As a result, ramping up production of the hybrid-only RAV4 is a huge priority for Toyota, helping justify its customers’ repeat loyalty whenever a new model comes out. The RAV4 is a great crossover that deserves its popularity. Production just needs to catch up to make the whole situation perfect. And the fact that the Kentucky manufacturing plant employs more than 9,000 Americans is just icing on the cake.
