Toyota Hopes Its New Paddle-Shift Gearbox Will Make You Forget About Manuals

When it comes to automakers that might want to make paddle shifters feel more engaging and responsive, Toyota is probably somewhere near the bottom of the list. But CarBuzz has just found a patent that shows Toyota is doing exactly that. It is looking at a new shift control system that could better respond to the driver and even remember what you wanted.

It’s all part of Toyota’s ongoing transition from the most boring cars around to a company that actively seeks out driving enthusiasts.

Toyota Has Invented An Automatic That Will Do What You Want

    2004 – 2005 Toyota Echo – gearshiftToyota

Automatic transmissions with manual shifting have been around for decades, but have only really been good in the last 10 years or so. Forget about the Hurst His and Hers shifters, or manually pulling from D to 1, we’re talking about cars with nearly full control from paddles on a torque converter automatics like Porsche and then VW’s Tiptronic system. And now, there are similar controls on nearly every model.

The problem with those systems is the problem of trying to protect the car from the driver. If you want to put your manual car into second at 100 miles per hour, the car will be happy to let you money shift and explode the engine into a million pieces at the same time. An automatic won’t let you do that. It will do the same thing in the other direction, where a stick-shift is happy to slot into sixth as you idle along, stalling the car. An automatic with paddles won’t.

Toyota’s new invention would let the car remember your impossible requests and then execute them later on when they are possible. We’re not talking hours or even minutes later, call it ASAP.

While normal cars will just ignore your request for a downshift as you’re braking hard but the revs are still too high, Toyota’s new invention won’t. It will remember the request, and then, as soon as the revs drop, it’ll grab that gear. This could be just a second’s delay or even less.

Could A Paddle-Shift Automatic Really Win Over Enthusiasts?

Toyota’s idea would also actively change the RPM where a downshift is allowed. If you’re braking quickly, the engine is going to keep slowing down. So maybe instead of allowing a downshift that would only let you get to 6,000 RPM on an engine with a 7,000 RPM redline, under hard braking it might give you 6,500 or even higher.

It could even give you the okay at slightly above redline, knowing that the heavy braking will have dropped the final engine speed in the short time it takes to shift. Preserving the engine, but adding responsiveness.

It would also give you a way to stop the automatic upshifts that happen when you stop accelerating, or accelerate to redline. A manual switch under the control of the driver could prevent the shift because the driver knows that they’re about to stop accelerating, will start again in a moment, or whatever other condition is about to happen.

If these seem like silly and small changes to you, then you’re not the customer Toyota is targeting with the patent. For nearly every Toyota owner, this is a feature you’d never experience. For a few owners, though, it could add a lot of fun and precision. Especially on track.

Give Toyota applause for making the GR 86, GR Corolla, and GR Supra with manual transmissions. But for the buyers of those cars who pick the two pedal option, this could be a big selling point.
