Top Gear Relaunch Faces Toughest Challenge Yet In New Grand Tour
This article has been updated with additional information on the forthcoming Grand Tour reboot and the challenges the BBC will face in trying to recapture the Top Gear magic.
Just when we think nothing else could possibly surprise us in this absolutely crazy year for automotive news, we get blind-sided by something else. At least this time it’s not more tariff news, or another upstart restomod company wanting a gazillion dollars to reimagine a classic supercar. This is something that, potentially, automotive enthusiasts from all walks of life might love.
Top Gear, the motoring show at Dunsfold that shaped a generation of gearheads, is coming back. If you have questions about that, well, so do we.
An Automotive Legacy Much Older Than Many People Realize
Top Gear rose to fame throughout the 2000s with presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. But the show’s roots actually date back to 1977 when it was much more a video magazine format for Europe, similar to the MotorWeek series in the US. Those earlier years saw numerous presenters chatting up the car world, including Tiff Needell and Vicki Butler-Henderson, both of whom would eventually host Fifth Gear, launching at the same time as the Top Gear reboot in 2002.
Clarkson and James May were also part of the original Top Gear era, with Clarkson joining in the mid-1980s and May coming along a few years later. Clarkson left in 1999, and the show in its original format was dropped in 2001. The reboot to the studio-format with an anonymous racing driver and wild automotive adventures launched in late 2002, with Clarkson back on the show. Following one series with Jason Dawe as a presenter, the familiar trio of Clarkson-Hammond-May solidified in 2003. But as Clarkson would say, there’s a bit more to it than that.

Following the trio’s departure for… reasons… in 2015, several new presenters were brought in to try and recapture the magic. With that, however, came driving antics that some believed were pushing the limits too far. When Freddie Flintoff suffered severe injuries resulting from a crash in late 2022, the BBC announced that Top Gear, which was hosted then by Flintoff, Paddy McGuiness, and Chris Harris, was on indefinite hiatus. There was no indication of when – or if – the show might return.

Now, nearly four years from Flintoff’s crash, Top Gear is returning. According to a BBC report, BBC Director of Entertainment Ed Havard addressed rumors about the show, saying: “There has been a lot of speculation about this and we can confirm that Top Gear is coming back.” He further went on to say there was nothing to share yet about a potential lineup, but promised that more information on the show would be coming soon.
Unfortunately, that means there currently isn’t a timeframe for when the relaunch will begin, but there are numerous rumors that comedian Jimmy Carr and ex-rugby player Joe Marler are being considered as hosts. It’s safe to assume that none of the former Top Gear hosts are returning. And while a timeframe isn’t confirmed, with Amazon poised to relaunch the next era of The Grand Tour in September 2026, seeing new Top Gear episodes within the next 12 months isn’t out of the question.
Destined For Success, Or Likely To Fail?
Despite the show’s age, most viewers think of Clarkson, Hammond, and May as Top Gear. Subsequent iterations have failed to capture the same spirit of that trio, proving that on-screen chemistry can’t be manufactured, at least not to the same level as that trio’s developed to over decades.

They continued that chemistry with Amazon’s The Grand Tour, and even in that show’s different format, it was a smash hit, while Top Gear struggled to re-establish its identity without them. Now, The Grand Tour is facing a reboot too, and even without Clarkson, Hammond, and May, it may still be the biggest thorn in Top Gear‘s side, thanks to the genuine chemistry between Thomas Holland and James Engelsman, and the infectious passion of Francis Bourgeois. The trailer for the new Grand Tour looks like a lot of fun, and the BBC will have a tough time trying to win over fans if they try to replicate the same old format with new faces.

The automotive world is moving towards software-defined vehicles where the driver doesn’t really have to even drive anymore. For enthusiasts, this is a very disheartening thought, but shows like Top Gear and The Grand Tour are celebrations of the automobile, and we could all use something to celebrate right now. And just maybe, a new Top Gear era can find new, exciting ways to love these modern tech-heavy vehicles and appreciate them in new ways.
Failing that, they could always drop a camper on a Reliant Robin and call it a day. In any case, we’ll be watching.
