E-bike theft is one of those problems where a good lock is only half the battle. Since no physical lock can ever give you a 100% guarantee of safety, if a thief actually gets away with your bike, knowing where it went can suddenly become a lot more important.
Now connected e-bike specialist Comodule has unveiled its latest solution, known as Astra, and one of its most interesting tricks is the ability to keep tracking an e-bike for up to 12 months – even when the bike is sitting in storage.
There are a lot of e-bike trackers out there, and while simpler versions like AirTags may have long battery life, solid GPS trackers that can pinpoint a bike’s location can rarely last more than a month or two without a recharge. That might be fine for everyday use, but bikes that are left in storage or just bikes that keep being moved after a theft are prime examples where longer tracking periods without necessary recharges are critical.
And Astra sounds like it could provide just that solution.
Astra is Comodule’s next-generation IoT hardware designed to be built directly into e-bikes, giving manufacturers a way to add a host of connected features ranging from live location tracking to smart locking and even electronic immobilization.
The company is currently offering demonstrations to manufacturers developing model year 2028 e-bikes.
Perhaps the biggest upgrade for riders worried about theft, beyond the impressive 12-month battery life, is Astra’s improved location technology. In addition to conventional satellite positioning, the system adds Wi-Fi Locate, which Comodule says improves positioning accuracy in dense cities, indoors, and other locations where GNSS reception can struggle.
That could be particularly useful in an actual theft scenario. GPS trackers are great when a stolen bike is sitting outside, but things get trickier when it disappears into an apartment building, warehouse, or parking garage. In those cases, knowing the rough X/Y coordinates aren’t enough, and more precise location data becomes the key to actually located the bike.
Astra also upgrades to Cat-1bis cellular connectivity, designed to provide more reliable connections indoors, in dense urban environments, and in remote locations.
Then there’s that 12-month figure, something of a headline feature. Comodule says smarter power management allows bikes equipped with Astra to remain trackable during long storage periods for up to a year. That doesn’t necessarily mean your bike can be ridden around for a year without charging – Astra normally draws power from the e-bike’s electrical system – but it means the security hardware can remain useful even when the bike itself has been sitting unused for an extended period.
And tracking is only part of the security package.
Depending on how a manufacturer integrates Astra, riders can access the bike’s live location and status through an app, use smart locking functions, receive alarm notifications, share the bike’s location or digital access, and even electronically immobilize the bike. Comodule also supports digital bike passports, recovery services, and integrations that can provide insurance benefits.
The module itself is smaller and more power efficient than Comodule’s previous hardware, while CAN connectivity allows it to communicate with an e-bike’s drive system and other smart components. Manufacturers can either use Comodule’s branded app and back-end platform or integrate Astra into their own software using the company’s API and SDK tools.
This isn’t Comodule’s first rodeo, either. The Estonia-based company says its technology has already connected more than 850,000 e-bikes, e-scooters, and other light electric vehicles over the last 11 years. While the name doesn’t carry as much recognition with everyday riders, Comodule is the quiet IoT engine powering the connectivity in major brands throughout the e-bike, e-scooter, and e-moto industry.
Of course, none of this makes a good physical lock obsolete. But I’ve long been a fan of the idea that the best e-bike security comes in layers: make the bike hard to steal in the first place with a couple of good quality locks, make the owner immediately aware when someone messes with it, and make the bike easy to locate – and ideally useless to the thief – if they still manage to get away with it.
Astra looks designed to tackle those latter layers better than ever.
