Volvo struck gold with the original S60 and V60 Polestar, which launched midway through the last decade. But as brilliant as that race-bred duo was, the performance clashed with the safety image Volvo had been cultivating over decades. As a result, they didn’t last long. Volvo spun off Polestar as a standalone brand for high-performance EVs in 2017, and the original Polestars exited shortly after. But Volvo wasn’t quite ready to give up on speedy sedans and wagons just yet.
What followed was the even more potent S60 and V60 Polestar Engineered models, which today make great choices for buyers seeking understated performance, and the V60 Polestar Engineered in particular could prove to be a smart buy for those seeking a car that holds its value better than most.
The Hybrid Powertrain That Made This Station Wagon Faster Than Most Sports Cars

The S60 Polestar Engineered sedan debuted for the 2019 model year as part of the redesigned third-generation S60 lineup, with the V60 Polestar Engineered wagon following for 2020. Unlike the gas-only S60 and V60 Polestar models they replaced, the new Polestar Engineered models were plug-in hybrids, based on the range-topping T8 Twin Engine versions of the S60 and V60.
An XC60 Polestar Engineered SUV also launched for 2020, and while it remains on sale, the S60 and V60 Polestar Engineered were dropped after the 2025 model year. For a family wagon that outwardly looks like every other school-run vehicle, what’s under the hood is shocking.

The numbers are one thing – but how does 455 hp feel when you’re also hauling a dog and a week of groceries? The powertrain in the Polestar Engineered models was a tuned version of the T8 Twin Engine setup, pairing a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with an electric motor for a combined 415 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque. That’s 15 hp and 22 lb-ft more than the regular T8 Twin Engine models, with the extra performance coming from ECU optimization software, something which Polestar used to offer as a dealer upgrade on earlier models.
And because the Polestar Engineered lineup was a plug-in hybrid, you also got some electric range. Here, the internal-combustion engine powered the front wheels while the electric motor drove the rear pair to form all-wheel drive.
Midway through the 2022 model year, Volvo upgraded its T8 Twin Engine powertrain, dropping the supercharger and leaving a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, while increasing the electric motor’s output and the battery’s capacity. The result was a new peak output of 455 hp and 523 lb-ft for all models equipped with the T8 Twin Engine powertrain, which was now referred to as the T8 Recharge. That included the Polestar Engineered lineup.

The performance upgrades didn’t stop at the powertrain. Volvo partnered with Swedish suspension specialist Öhlins to equip the Polestar Engineered models with dual-flow-valve dampers, while an Öhlins front strut brace added body stiffness to further improve handling. Completing the package were six-piston brake calipers finished in Polestar’s signature gold, which sat behind lightweight 19-inch forged alloys.
A Wagon That Weighs As Much As A Midsize SUV And Hits 60 in 4.3 Seconds
On looks alone, no one is going to think the V60 Polestar Engineered is anything special, but with over 400 hp on tap, the plug-in hybrid wagon is genuinely quick. We should point out that this is a real feat considering a curb weight of around 4,500 lbs, or about the same as many midsize SUVs.
At low revs, the electric motor helps for initial acceleration while the force-fed four-cylinder provides plenty of shove as speed builds. This is especially helpful when accelerating from 40 mph and up, like during a highway merge. What stands apart from the competition is that the power delivery is remarkably smooth and quiet. If you’re looking for exhaust theatrics, it’s best to look elsewhere.

The V60’s handling is also a strong point, though it’s not anywhere near the track-carving-like performance of something like a BMW M3. The Öhlins suspension keeps the heavy wagon planted through corners, which helps to build confidence. Depending on how you like your ride, dampers can be softened for a compliant ride or stiffened for sharper responses. The biggest drawback is that adjusting the dampers requires getting out of the car and manually changing them (under the hood up front and in the wheel arches at the rear), rather than simply selecting a setting from the cabin, though this old-school approach is sure to be a plus for some buyers.

Like the rest of the vehicle, the V60 Polestar Engineered’s interior is more on the restrained side. However, there are some touches that remind you that this isn’t a run-of-the-mill family hauler. Polestar’s gold hue returns to dress up the seatbelts, joined by metal-mesh aluminum accents and Nappa leather trim to add a mix of performance and luxury.
The real star of the V60’s interior, though, is space. There’s roughly 18 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to about 50 cubic feet with them folded flat. And because this is a wagon rather than an SUV, you get a low load floor and a wide, relatively squared-off opening.With all that going for it, you’d expect used prices to have cratered as buyers moved on to newer alternatives. You’d be wrong.
Used Prices Look Very Sticky

Because the Volvo V60 is already a niche product, the Polestar Engineered version occupies a very small segment within that niche, resulting in unicorn-level sales numbers. For context, Volvo sold just over 2,800 V60s in the US in 2024, and roughly two-thirds of those were the more rugged V60 Cross Country. That scarcity has helped hold up used prices for the V60 Polestar Engineered.
Searching the CarBuzz Marketplace and other popular classifieds websites, the most affordable examples we found started at just over $50,000. These were the earliest examples, from the 2020 and 2021 model years, but mileage was also relatively low, at around 30,000 miles in both cases. That’s not bad considering the original MSRP was around $67,000, showing just how little these cars have depreciated.

More recent examples are listed at or around their original MSRP, even with 30,000 miles or more on the clock. Compare that with something like a Mercedes-AMG C63 from the same vintage, where 2020 and 2021 examples can be found for below $40,000, albeit with higher mileage. For bargain hunters, the XC60 Polestar Engineered offers the best value. It packs the same performance upgrades, yet decent examples can be found for around $30,000.
The low sales numbers mean independent reliability data is also hard to come by. However, because Volvo’s regular Twin Engine, later Recharge, models use nearly identical powertrain hardware, we can look at data for something like the regular XC60. Owner reports and complaints for the compact SUV on CarComplaints suggest the shared powertrain is generally reliable when treated with proper maintenance. However, if you go with a cheaper, higher-mileage example, be sure to set aside some money for a pre-purchase inspection and potential repairs down the road.
The Wagon Is Nearly Extinct, And That’s A Problem

Wagons are definitely a dying breed, and it’s not only the US that’s to blame, as even Volvo, which sells a good portion of its vehicles in wagon-loving Europe, has been cutting back on the body style. It means automakers are increasingly only prepared to offer wagons in high-end segments, where lower volumes aren’t as detrimental to the bottom line.
At this moment, the wagons that remain on sale in the US are all expensive niches. With the Subaru Outback turning into an SUV with its 2026 redesign and the Volvo V60 having already exited the market, the cost of entry for a new wagon is now more than $70,000. The most affordable is the outgoing Audi A6 Allroad, which is still available for the 2026 model year.

That said, electric vehicles of all things could help revive the body style. As automakers look to offer the most interior volume in the most aerodynamically efficient way possible, sleek wagons could make a comeback. Because of this, Volvo chief strategy and product officer Michael Fleiss said earlier this year that the automaker is looking at the possibility of developing new wagons.
The Makings Of A Future Collectible?

It’s too early to say with certainty that the Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered is going to be a future collectible, but it has all the right ingredients, the main one being the low number of units that actually made it into the country. Setting all of that aside, if you’re looking for a good-looking, fast ride that also happens to be practical and somewhat reliable, the V60 Polestar Engineered makes a great case, especially if you like to drive something different from everyone else. If its value holds or even rises over time, that’s just icing on the cake.
