While BMW offers a plethora of cars with mild-hybrid assistance, it only has five models that take it one step further. Plug-in hybrid cars, like the X5 hybrid, offer you the convenience of plugging into a wall charger for some combustion-free driving later on, and using their conventional engines for propulsion one that charge is depleted.

BMW currently offers a varied mix of PHEV options: two sedans, two SUVs and a wagon. So, which one suits your needs the best? Here are all the BMW plug-in hybrid models currently on sale, from the cheapest to most expensive.

This article represents only full-hybrid or plug-in hybrid models; mild-hybrid versions are excluded. Pricing and specifications are sourced from the manufacturer and are correct at the time of writing; automakers may change or update this at any time. We list every BMW hybrid on sale right now by price, from cheapest to most expensive.

    2026 BMW 550e xDrive

    Base MSRP: $75,500

    2026 BMW 550e xDrive Specs

    Engine

    3.0L Turbo Inline-6 Hybrid

    Transmission

    8-speed Automatic

    Horsepower

    483 hp

    Drivetrain

    AWD

    Fuel Economy (Gas & Electric)

    68 MPGe

    Maximum Range

    430 mi

The first BMW hybrid model on the list that allows you to use either electricity or gas for motivation is the 550e sedan. This also makes it the cheapest PHEV currently in the automaker’s lineup. Along with the legendary B58 engine, it also features a 19-kWh battery that provides an electric-only range of up to 33 miles, which is good enough for a short office commute. We drove the 2026 BMW 550e and found it to be a perfect middle ground as a 5 Series that could do it all.

Inside, you get the updated interior with a dual 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen. The new interior also gets you more ambient lighting all around the cabin, and BMW also offers multiple optional packages to add features.

The 550e offers plenty of power and performance, which brings it close to M5 territory, at a much lower price. As the 7 Series is not offered as a hybrid anymore, and the M5 is meant for outright performance more than luxury, the 550e is also a good blend of comfort for passengers at the back, if you prefer being chauffeured. However, the next car on the list may offer even better value.

    2026 BMW X5 xDrive50e

    Base MSRP: $76,000

    2026 BMW X5 xDrive50e Specs

    Engine

    3.0L Turbo Inline-6 Hybrid

    Transmission

    8-speed Automatic

    Horsepower

    483 hp

    Drivetrain

    AWD

    Fuel Economy (Gas & Electric)

    60 MPGe

    Maximum Range

    440 mi

The BMW X5 xDrive50e gets the same B58 engine, combined with a 19.2-kWh battery that offers an even more impressive range of around 40 miles. For 2026, the SUV has got faster charging speeds, and has performance that almost matches that of the V8-powered X5 M. You also get more kit inside as standard with the X5 when compared to the 550e, such as a panoramic glass moon roof, hands-free trunk opening, etc.

“If you love sedans, the 550e is a stellar option, one that we would recommend above the M5 for its ability to do everything well. However, the X5 Hybrid is a superior value for just $500 more, starting at $76,000.”

    – Jared Rosenholtz, Former Editor-at-Large, CarBuzz

With the Neue Klasse X5 already announced, bringing with it an updated interior and exterior, the 2026 X5 xDrive50e is one of the last BMW hybrid models of this generation, which may result in some discounted pricing. While the all-new X5 offers an even bigger battery for more electric range, it is still based on the same platform as this generation. If you prefer the looks of this version of the X5, you should act quick while dealers still have these in stock.

The X5 Neue Klasse will also be available with five powertrain options, and much like its previous generation, the X5 Hybrid may be the perfect balance between comfort and performance, with enough space to carry five passengers and their luggage as well.

    2026 BMW M5

    Base MSRP: $123,300

    2026 BMW M5 Specs

    Engine

    4.4L Twin-turbo V8 Hybrid

    Transmission

    8-speed Automatic

    Horsepower

    717 hp

    Drivetrain

    AWD

    Fuel Economy (Gas & Electric)

    47 MPGe

    Maximum Range

    280 mi

Moving onto BMW hybrids that prioritize performance over efficiency, this generation of the BMW M5 is the first plug-in hybrid M5 ever. A stark departure from the F90 M5, the G90 was hugely controversial at launch, especially because of its 5,251-pound curb weight. However, it makes up for it with sheer horsepower. 717 hp is enough for this land yacht to complete the 0–60 mph sprint in 3.4 secs. It combines the brutal S68 V8 engine with an 18.6-kWh battery that can provide an electric-only range of up to 25 miles, according to the EPA.

This is considerably less than the last two models, but the battery is mainly used to fill in torque gaps during hard driving and outright performance. It also looks considerably more aggressive than the regular 5 Series sedan, with wider fenders and a more aggressive stance. If you want one of the most powerful performance sedans, without going all-electric, the M5 is the middle ground that can silently do the office commute, or let its V8 do the talking. This also makes this the most powerful BMW hybrid sedan currently on sale, which has relatively stable prices on the used market, according to our price trends graph.

    2026 BMW M5 Touring

    Base MSRP: $125,300

    2026 BMW M5 Touring Specs

    Engine

    4.4L Twin-turbo V8 Hybrid

    Transmission

    8-speed Automatic

    Horsepower

    717 hp

    Drivetrain

    AWD

    Fuel Economy (Gas & Electric)

    54 MPGe

    Maximum Range

    270 mi

If the sedan’s trunk space is not enough for you, the M5 Touring takes everything from the M5 sedan, and gives you a more practical cargo area. You get 27 cu-ft of space that increases to 67 cu-ft with the rear seats folded. The M5 sedan only gets 16.5 cu-ft. Weight increases by around 200 lbs, but that doesn’t make it any heavier than the three-row BMW X7.

It retains the same engine and powertrain configuration, and is marginally slower than the sedan to 60 mph, but it is still impressively capable around corners. If you want a car that can do the school run in EV-only, and eat up any road you throw at it, all while having space to carry the entire family’s requirements, the M5 Touring is the ultimate combination of performance and practicality, but mostly performance.

    2026 BMW XM Label

    Base MSRP: $159,600

    2026 BMW XM Label Specs

    Engine

    4.4L Twin-turbo V8 Hybrid

    Transmission

    8-speed Automatic

    Horsepower

    738 hp

    Drivetrain

    AWD

    Fuel Economy (Gas & Electric)

    47 MPGe

    Maximum Range

    300 mi

The winner in the battle for the most powerful BMW hybrid cars is the XM Label. The base XM has been discontinued for this year, leaving just the top of the range ‘Label’ trim. The S68 V8 is paired with a 25.7-kWh battery and provides an EV-only range of around 30 miles. The 738-hp figure also makes this the most powerful MW model currently on sale.

While the exterior was controversial at launch, the XM gets the most cutting-edge technology currently on offer by BMW, such as adaptive suspension as standard. You get M drive modes and chassis systems with hill descent control and a sport differential. The interior gets the same two digital displays as the X5 PHEV, but with even more premium materials. The car is a strict two-row SUV, with a large panoramic roof.

With the next-generation Neue Klasse cars, the list of BMW hybrids may increase over the coming years. Only time will tell if combining combustion engines with battery power in the same vehicle is just a stepping stone towards an all-electric future. BMW, much like a lot of other manufacturers, is offering all powertrain options to customers, for them to choose which one suits their needs the best.
