There are many criteria that we need to consider when purchasing a family SUV. You have to think about the safety features, interior space, cost performance, and even the gas mileage. While hybrid SUV models are a common sight on the market currently, if you wish for a more efficient powertrain, but refuse to go full electric, the plug-in hybrid might be the answer you’ve been searching for.

The Ford Escape PHEV offers the only plug-in hybrid powertrain that’s currently available in Ford’s lineup. Combined with the best mpg figure on any Ford Escape with an electric range of 37 miles, the Escape PHEV is perfect for those seeking the best of both worlds, and it’s the only way to get plug-in efficiency with a Ford badge attached to it.

All information has been sourced from the manufacturer and EPA, all prices listed exclude destination fees and any offers; pricing and specs are correct at the time of writing. Automakers reserve the right to update pricing without notice.

The Last Hybrid SUV Ford Sells New In 2026

The Ford Escape has been one of the most iconic Ford SUV models for decades. Since the model was first introduced to the US market in 2001, the Escape has been an important player within Ford’s product lineup. Entering its fourth generation, the current Ford Escape got a refresh in 2023, which gave it a sharper exterior look along with multiple improvements to the interior design. While there are other more exciting options, such as the ST-Line or Platinum, with more luxury features, the Escape PHEV is the king of efficiency and sits right in the middle of the model lineup.

    First-Ever Hybrid SUV

It may come as a surprise to you, but the hybrid powertrain and Ford Escape can be traced all the way back to 20 years ago. The first-generation Escape is the world’s first SUV that comes with a hybrid powertrain. Introduced for the 2005 model year, the first generation Escape Hybrid is powered by a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an electric motor. The hybrid powertrain produces a maximum horsepower output of 155 horsepower and allows the Escape Hybrid to achieve a fuel economy figure of around 35 to 40 mpg for city driving and 29 to 31 mpg for highway driving.

Fast-forward 20 years later, and the Escape Hybrid is still alive and active within Ford’s lineup. While you can still get the Escape with a regular hybrid powertrain, the Escape PHEV seeks to continue the tradition that was started by the first-generation Escape Hybrid. To be the most fuel-efficient SUV that comes with a Ford badge.

“Ford is among the leading hybrid automakers in the U.S. because we understand that not all of our customers are ready to go all-electric. With two hybrid powertrain choices, customers can spend less time at the gas station and keep more money in their pockets.”

Ford Escape Hybrid Performance And Efficiency Is Class-Leading

2024 Ford Escape Hybrid 2.5L NA I4 EngineFord

The biggest highlight of the Escape PHEV is what lies under its hood, the 2.5-liter Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder engine is paired to an eCVT transmission. The electric motor on the PHEV model is integrated into the transmission, maximizing the efficiency and allowing for a smoother transition between electric and gasoline. This PHEV system has a maximum output of 210 horsepower, and all the power is sent to the front wheels only, as all-wheel drive is not available on the PHEV model.

While the 210 maximum horsepower output and front-wheel-drive option don’t sound like an exciting combination, that was never the mission of the Escape PHEV. With an emphasis on efficiency and electric driving, the Escape PHEV has a maximum 37 miles of EPA-rated electric range. The plug-in hybrid powertrain is also rated at 40 combined mpg and 101 MPGe, according to EPA, making it the most fuel-efficient SUV in the segment. Moreover, the biggest perk of this plug-in hybrid system is its ability to be a money-saver. According to the EPA, the Escape PHEV will save you up to $6,500 over five years when compared to the average new vehicle on the market.

Another key highlight of the Escape PHEV is the different drive modes designed to maximize the potential of this plug-in hybrid powertrain. The four different modes are as follows:

    • Auto EV: The mode that allows the vehicle’s onboard computer to decide the use of gas engine and electric motor depending on driving conditions.
    • EV Now: Essentially, the electric mode that you’ll find in most PHEV vehicles. It allows for all-electric drive until the battery is depleted.
    • EV Later: Switches to full gas-powered driving to conserve the battery charge for later use. Basically, preserving electric range for later use.
    • EV Charge: Deploy the gasoline engine as a generator to recharge the battery while driving.

    Ford Escape PHEV: Features Highlights

Being fuel efficient isn’t the only mission of the Escape PHEV. As a family SUV and a daily commuter, the Escape PHEV also comes with a handful of features to make every journey safe and relaxing. Although the PHEV is not the top-spec Escape with all the premum features, Ford didn’t forget that safety shouldn’t be compromised, as the Escape PHEV is equipped with Ford Co-Pliot360 Assist+, which comes with plenty of safety features as standard to keep you safe behind the wheel. The safety features include adaptive cruise control, a lane-keeping system, and a blind-spot information system.

The cabin doesn’t shout premium the moment you step in, but it gets the job done. It comes standard with dual-zone climate control, a 13.2-inch SYNC 4 display with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, along with an eight-way power driver’s seat. If you wish for more features in your Escape PHEV, the Plug-in Hybrid Premium package is available for an extra $4530. The optional package adds plenty of desirable features such as a 360-degree camera, B&O sound system, 12.3-inch gauge cluster along with a full list of features that will make your journey in the Escape PHEV more enjoyable.

The Hybrid Ford SUV Is Cheaper And More Efficient Than Rivals

The Escape PHEV puts up a good fight even when facing competitors with new updates. Toyota’s best-selling RAV4 just received a new upgrade in 2026, and the Kia Sportage also gets a style refresh for the 2026 model year. While the Escape has been on the market since 2023 without any significant upgrade, this Ford PHEV still has the ability to trade punches with these newer rivals. Performance is the weak side of the Escape PHEV; both the RAV4 PHEV and Sportage PHEV come standard with all-wheel drive, while the Escape is solely available with front-wheel drive. Horsepower figures are also not the strength of the Escape. The 210 combined horsepower is significantly weaker when compared to the 324 horsepower on the RAV4 and 268 horsepower on the Sportage.

It’s not all bad news for the Escape though. In terms of fuel efficiency and mpg figures, the Escape is among the best in its class. The 101 MPGe is the same as the entry-level RAV4 PHEV and better than the 83 MPGe on the Sportage. As for the electric range, the Escape comes in second place behind the RAV4, beating the Sportage’s 34-mile EV range by a comfortable margin. Last but not least, the Escape is the only vehicle in this comparison that has a price tag under $40K. Both the RAV4 and Sportage both have an MSRP above $40K, while the Escape is almost five grands cheaper than both of them. That’s an impressive cost performance by any standard. While the Escape may not have the latest technology and exterior styling, if you are looking for a plug-in hybrid SUV with a reasonable price tag, the Escape PHEV is definitely the one you wouldn’t want to miss in 2026.
