Can’t get enough automotive biopics? Well, here’s another, and this time it could be a five-pack. We’ve seen Ferrari and Lamborghini films on the big screen, but Italy’s car scene is big enough for more. If you’ve been waiting for a Maserati origin story, we have good news to share.

A movie about the Maserati Brothers is coming, and the first trailer is here. Amid the cars and competition is plenty of riveting drama, along with some croquet. You know, exactly what every car fan wants to see.

More Family Drama Than Any Fast & Furious Movie

Maserati The Brothers movie trailerMaserati The Brothers

Maserati: The Brothers tells the story of the five brothers who formed the company in 1914. Their story may not be as well-known as Enzo Ferrari or Ferruccio Lamborghini, possibly because the Maserati clan predates them by several decades. But their effect on the Italian auto industry is arguably the largest of them all, at least in the early days.

You could call this film the third entry in the Italian automotive trilogy. They’re more than loosely connected, because the producer of this new film also produced the Ferrari and Lamborghini biopics. It’s also directed by Bobby Moresco, who directed the Lambo film.

The cast includes some properly big Hollywood icons, too. Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino play financiers and investors in the company. Andy Garcia and Jessica Alba also play important roles. But the Maserati brothers are played by five actors better known for their Italian film roles.

Specifically, Michele Morrone, Lorenzo do Moor, Salvatore Esposito, and Matteo Bassi play Alfieri, Carlo, Bindo, and Ettore, respectively. Brother Ernesto Maserati is played by Leo Ferrari, an actor we don’t believe to be related to that Ferrari, but one can certainly appreciate the irony.

Is The Maserati Story Worthy Of The Big Screen?

The trailer features everything you want from a movie trailer. Family, dramatic looks, cheering, death, and a kiss in the rain. And of course there’s all kinds of fast-driving action in pre-war open-wheel cars, complete with crashes and explosions. And gear shifts… so many gear shifts.

While there were actually seven Maserati brothers, only five went into the automotive industry. Sadly, one died at age one. The other became a painter. The brothers started working on cars at the start of the 20th century, building Grand Prix cars for a company called Diatto. They struck out on their own under the Maserati name and started building their own race and road cars.

We won’t go deeper into the history of the company and the brothers, because it will be in the movie and we don’t want to give away everything. But, spoiler alert, Maserati is still in business today.

Dozens of classic race cars were re-created for the movie, and it looks like at least some of them will be crashed. Fortunately, though his character is Italian, Hopkins is wise enough to know not to attempt the accent.

Honestly, any automotive enthusiast can appreciate a story on motoring history, so that alone makes this a topic of interest for the motoring world. Hopefully, the story stays pretty close to Maserati’s actual history, because the company’s place in the Italian and global automotive sector is both notable and significant.

This is producer Andrea Iervolino’s third major automotive biopic, but there could be more along the way. IMDB shows that he is working on a Bugatti film as well as venturing further out of Italy for a biopic on New Zealand F1 racing legend Bruce McLaren.
