The BMW That Has Gold Wing Owners Rethinking Long-Distance Touring

For a long time, traditional full-dressers have set the standard for luxury long-distance touring on two wheels. Harley-Davidson and Indian lead the pack with luxury galore and top-spec components. And metric luxury tourer options like the Honda Gold Wing do one better by offering more sophisticated technology for a relatively affordable price tag.

Now, though, there’s a new threat to this segment: large-capacity versatile adventure tourers. Not only do these ADVs offer similar levels of riding comfort, convenience, and luxury features, but they also edge ahead with added off-roading finesse. Want a reliable used luxury ADV tourer? Then, we have a definitive and affordable winner that will make you want to ditch your Gold Wing.

Traditional Luxury Tourers Have Their Limitations

Traditional touring bikes (especially the full dresser options) have nailed the formula to offer the most comfortable, luxurious, and stress-free cross-country riding experience. But versatility isn’t their strong suit. Life on endless paved roads is great until a bad stretch or tight spaces come into the picture. Enter ADV tourers. They make a better case by offering more than 90 percent of a full-dresser’s experience in a much lighter and more versatile package.

Manufacturers BMW, Ducati, and Triumph particularly deserve credit for this, as they offer a long-distance version of their versatile, flagship ADVs with a bigger fuel tank and more mile-munching-focused comfort and convenience features. They come with relatively smaller road-focused wheels, less suspension travel, and more luggage space. Their off-roading capabilities are reduced, but they are still a lot better than what a low-slung full-dresser would offer.

You Can Even Get These Flagship Adventure Tourers On A Budget

While new 2026 models are already impressive, we have a gold mine of used touring-ready adventure bikes at our disposal, too. If we pick the right one with impressive reliability and after-sales support, then a luxury touring experience can be had for as much as half the price of a new full-dresser. Thankfully, we don’t have to look far because the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure fits this bill perfectly.

    Used Prices: Starting From $17,000

The prime example of this is a used R 1250 GS Adventure. The standard R 1250 GS is already a great all-rounder. But the Adventure model takes things further, becoming a formidable luxury touring bike alternative. The GSA has a much larger 7.9-gallon fuel tank and more suspension travel. It comes standard with heavy-duty engine and tank crash bars, auxiliary lights, wider footpegs, a larger windscreen, and stainless steel luggage mounts for aluminum panniers. Thus, the 1250 GSA offers nearly 90 percent of the experience with the added advantage of scaling over rocky terrain with ease. The huge fuel tank should translate to an easy 350+ mile range (claimed fuel economy rating is ~47 miles per gallon).

Then, we have the prices. Currently, the last-gen R 1250 GS models (2020 to 2023) are being sold for as low as $16,500 on the used marketplaces. We even stumbled upon a used 2024 model for under $17,000, which is a pretty good deal. Oh, and while BMW has replaced the R 1250 GS with the new tech-loaded R 1300 GS, the predecessor still packs enough punch to stand tall in 2026. In fact, a used R 1250 GS actually offers more value than the R 1300 GS, if you are unfazed by the intimidating dimensions of the former.

Powered By A Versatile Boxer-Twin That Loves The Open Road

The R 1250 GSA packs a proven liquid-cooled 1,254 cc boxer twin engine with 136 horsepower at 7,750 RPM and 105 pound-feet of torque at 6,250 RPM. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual and a final shaft drive system. All the low-end oomph helps with its relaxed yet sprinty highway touring capabilities.

Long Service Intervals And Solid Reliability

The BMW badge might persuade you into thinking the GS is an expensive bike to maintain. That, however, is not the case because long service intervals help keep the GS up and about for longer. Upholding its globe-trotting ability is its durable build quality all around. BMW specifies an oil change every 6,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. The valve clearance checks are reserved for every 12,000 miles. Furthermore, the shaft drive eliminates the need to replace sprockets and tighten and lube a chain every few hundred miles.

The shaft drive does need an inspection every 12,500 miles and a preventive replacement at 60,000 miles. This could become an expensive affair, but thankfully, BMW covers the shaft replacement for the lifetime of the vehicle at no cost to the owner. This benefit wasn’t extended to the new R 1300 GS, making the 1250 GS more desirable on the ownership front.

Adaptive Underpinnings Help With Stability And Comfort On And Off The Road

The R 1250 GSA is underpinned by a two-section frame consisting of the main frame and a bolt-on rear frame, with the mill being a stressed member here. The frame sits on a unique suspension setup: BMW’s 37 mm Telelever setup with a central spring strut and BMW’s Paralever assembly with a spring strut attached to a cast aluminum single-sided swing arm.

The Telelever front setup is famed for offering a high level of anti-dive under hard braking and also elevates confidence when going fast or over rough terrain. The GSA electronic suspension control (optional when new) further helps with automatic damping and load compensation based on riding modes. This electronic control helps this nearly 600-pound tall-riding ADV behave as a stable highway runner, a commendable off-roader, and even a nimble mountain-road companion.

Packs Top-Spec Technology Even By 2026 Standards

As for the cockpit, there’s a crisp TFT with smartphone connectivity. It enables access to a slew of standard safety, assistive, and convenience features, including Dynamic Traction Control, lean-sensitive ABS, Hill Start Control, and three ride modes (Eco, Rain, and Road). The optional suite is also solid, with the aforementioned Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment with automatic load leveling, Riding Mode Pro with additional modes (Dynamic, Dynamic Pro, Enduro, and Enduro Pro), Automated Hill Start Control Pro, Dynamic Brake Assist, and Engine Brake Control. The best part about used motorcycles is that all of these optional features can be bundled for much less than the original price. Most used R 1250 GS specimens often come stacked with all optional features.
