Jeep has been updating its lineup for this year and the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee receive a host of new upgrades. These improve on the shortcomings of the 2023 Cherokee, and the all-new 2026 model gives the Grand Cherokee a smaller yet more powerful powertrain.
So, which Jeep SUV makes more sense for you between the compact Jeep Cherokee vs Grand Cherokee? We compare their engines, exterior, interior and, finally, their price to find out if it is worth paying more. It may not be as straightforward as you think!

New Engines For Both

The Grand Cherokee gets a new engine for this year, albeit only on the higher trims. The Laredo and Laredo X still get the tried and tested 3.6L Pentastar V6 producing 293 hp. From the Laredo Altitude trim onwards, you now get a 2.0L turbocharged I4 producing 324 hp. Both engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Surprisingly for a Jeep, RWD is standard with an option for the 4X4 priced at $2,000.
Jeep does not offer any mild- or full-hybrid assistance for these engines, and the fuel economy suffers as such, with the 2WD SUV with the I4 being rated for a city/highway/combined score of 21/27/23 mpg by the EPA. The AWD version is rated for 20/25/22 respectively.

The Cherokee is at the other end of the modern powertrains, being Jeep’s first ever hybrid engine on offer in the US. There is only one powertrain on offer, a 1.6L I4 with two electric motors. The engine itself produces 177 hp and the electric motors provide around 33 additional hp for a combined total output of 210 hp. The engine is paired with a CVT gearbox and all-wheel drive is standard. The rear axle is mechanically driven, not just by the electric motors, and is capable of disconnecting to improve fuel efficiency.
Based on Stellantis’ STLA platform, Jeep may bring some other powertrain options to the Cherokee as well as some off-road focused trims, although a plug-in hybrid is unlikely. One of the biggest improvements over the 2023 Cherokee is its improved fuel economy due to the hybrid system, now rated at 39/35/37 mpg for the city/highway/combined.

The Jeep Cherokee is all new for this year, featuring a revised look with the signature seven slats in the grille. It is considerably bigger in terms of length, width and height than the discontinued Cherokee in 2023, which in turn offers more space inside. The Grand Cherokee gets an updated front and rear, among other changes inside, which we will discuss later on in the article.
Both Jeep SUVs offer a plethora of trims. Let’s start with the Cherokee first:
- Cherokee: Entry-level trim with 17-inch rims.
- Laredo: 18-inch rims as standard.
- Limited: Optional 20-inch rims and all-season performance tires.
- 85th Anniversary Edition: 20-inch blue oxide painted rims and all-season performance tires are standard.
- Overland: Top of the range trim with two-tone paint and gloss black painted roof.
The Grand Cherokee has seven trims on offer:
- Laredo & Laredo X: Entry-level trims with the older V6 engine and the 8.4-inch touchscreen.
- Laredo Altitude: First trim with the new Hurricane I4 engine and 18-inch rims.
- Limited: 20-inch rims as standard.
- 85th Anniversary Edition: 20-inch blue oxide painted wheels.
- Limited Reserve: Adds a panoramic sunroof.

The difference in size is quite apparent between the two. In terms of towing, the Cherokee can tow up to 3,500 pounds, whereas the Grand Cherokee has a maximum towing capacity of 6,200 pounds. If you live in an urban area and want a daily city driver, the Cherokee, especially with its hybrid engine, may be the way to go. However, if you need space, the Grand Cherokee offers an abundance of just that, if you do not mind the lower efficiency rating.

The Price To Pay For Luxury

The new Cherokee benefits from the enlarged dimensions, and gets a new interior as well. The level of plushness depends on the trim you opt for, with a white cloth interior available on the Laredo, Limited and Overland trim. A ‘Capri’ leatherette upholstery is available on the Limited and Overland trims as well as a heated steering wheel. The top of the range trim also offers ventilated front and heated rear seats wrapped in leather as a part of a $995 package. Material usage is good throughout, with some hard plastics lower.
The Grand Cherokee is a two-row SUV with an option for the third row in the Grand Cherokee L. The two entry-level trims still get the older smaller central screen, whereas all trims from the Loredo Altitude onwards get the updated 12.3-inch screen. While the interior is quite well-equipped from the base trim, luxury materials like Nappa leather, metal on the dashboard and wood inserts require you to upgrade to the Summit trim.
The Cherokee is a smaller SUV, with 40.2 inches of rear legroom and 38.5 inches of headroom at the back. Cargo capacity is 33.6 cubic feet with all seats folded up. The Grand Cherokee offers 17.2 cu-ft of cargo space if you go for the three-row version. The two-row SUV gets 38 cu-ft of cargo space behind the second row.

The 2026 Grand Cherokee starts at $38,920 for the Laredo trim. An X package with heated front seats, sunroof, and apowered tailgate is priced at $2,495. The trim with the new I4 and the updated interior screen starts at $44,360. The vast trim lineup ends with the Summit trim that starts at $60,600. If you want three-rows, the Grand Cherokee L costs an additional $2,000 over any trim. The AWD is also priced at $2,000, but is standard on trims above the Limited trim. While the Laredo trim offers good space for its price, the over $60k Summit trim is a tougher sell. It does offer a more premium interior but the lack of oomph from the I4 engine may sway potential buyers.

The Cherokee starts at an MSRP of $35,000. The top of the range Overland trim starts at $43,000. It is more expensive when compared to similarly equipped rivals like the Hyundai Tuscon Hybrid or Kia Sportage Hybrid in their base trim. The Toyota RAV4 also undercuts the Cherokee. The CR-V Hybrid has a higher starting price, but it is still cheaper in its top spec trim compared to the Overland trim. Nevertheless, the new Cherokee marks a significant step for Jeep in terms of hybrid engines and efficiency ratings. While its rivals may offer better value for money, this update brings the Cherokee right into the mix.
Which One Is The Better Deal?
Should You Spend More?
When compared, the Grand Cherokee is just over $3,000 more than the base Cherokee. If we compare the Overland trim of the Cherokee to the Loredo Altitude of the Grand Cherokee, the bigger SUV does not seem like it is worse value for money. While you do miss out on a hybrid powertrain and better fuel efficiency, you do get an abundance of interior space and tech for the price.
In the brutal compact SUV market that the Cherokee is now a part of, value is of the utmost importance, and it unfortunately falls short in that aspect. In terms of our price trends chart, the Grand Cherokee holds its value on the used market better than the Cherokee as well.
However, it is never as easy as it seems. Both the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee have been recalled several times for this model year, according to the NHTSA. The Grand Cherokee has had it worse with three recalls so far, with a fire risk warning due to the high-voltage battery. The Cherokee has had two recalls so far, with issues such as loss of ABS and trailer light failures. With reliability issues looming over both SUVs, the Grand Cherokee may be a little better in the long run as it avoids hybrid complexities.
The Superior Jeep SUV In 2026 Is…
While both SUVs serve different purposes, the Grand Cherokee offers more of everything for not a lot more money. However, if you want a compact SUV for the city that gives you good mileage and is maneuverable enough, the Cherokee is a good proposition, albeit a little expensive when compared to the competition.
The Grand Cherokee may be worse on efficiency and only have a traditional ICE engine, but the interior and space in its midsize SUV platform are competitive for its segment. Once, and if, the reliability issues are ironed out, the Grand Cherokee offers good value for money, provided you can take the hit on fuel economy.
