The 563-HP Twin-Turbo V8 Sleeper Sedan Getting Rarer Every Year

It goes without saying that most sleeper sedans manage to gain popularity as the years go by. More and more folks discover the particular model’s performance potential, the word spreads, and so forth. Think of models like the Buick Lucerne Super, which packed a 302-horsepower V8 underneath its extremely plain styling. There’s also the 415-horsepower Chevrolet SS sedan, as well as the most recent iteration of the Ford Fusion Sport, which boasts a twin-turbocharged V6 paired with all-wheel drive.

However, when it comes to Audi’s recent sleeper sedan, virtually no one knows about it, and it’s actually managed to become more obscure as time has drawn on. The model in question is the Audi S8, the brand’s souped-up flagship sedan. Its face has remained largely the same for quite a while now, and Audi has worked hard to keep its hot nature hidden with rather plain-Jane styling. Under that styling, though, there are loads of technological marvels at work that help the S8 maintain its ultimate, chronically under-the-radar sleeper status.

    Audi Perfected The Sleeper Sedan

There are “sleepers”, which are models that have four doors and some cargo space, but have outlandish exterior features like wings, ground effects, or hood scoops that give away their performance-oriented nature. Then, there are sleepers, which only give away their athletic side if you look very closely. Of course, they’ll also give away their true nature when you mash the throttle into the floor.

Audi’s current S8 is in its fourth generation, also known as the “D5.” It boasts a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter, mild-hybrid V8 under its hood that provides the humdrum-styled flagship boatloads of power without much fuss. The engine itself is extremely technical, featuring things like a Hot-Vee setup, wherein both turbos are situated in the “V” of the engine, allowing for shorter exhaust pathways. This leads to a greatly-reduced amount of turbo lag.

Hooked up to the engine is an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that can shift gears in as little as 200 milliseconds. For context, the human eye blinks at a speed of about 250 milliseconds on average, meaning the S8 can, quite literally, shift gears in the blink of an eye. As you’d expect, Audi includes its Quattro all-wheel drive system in the S8. It’s a rear-biased system, and can send up to 85 percent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels, or up to 70 percent to the front.

All of this supercar-like performance is hidden right underneath an extremely plain-looking shell. Apart from an optional black grille and, if optioned, a set of black wheels, you couldn’t even tell the Audi S8 was a fully-fledged sleeper sedan until you locate the tiny “S8” badges. While loads of manufacturers that produce hot sedans these days make it very well known via aggressive styling, the S8 tries to remain as inconspicuous as possible, sticking to the original “sleeper” philosophy.

The last time that the current D5 Audi S8 received a facelift was in 2022, and even that wasn’t much to write home about. What the S8 manages to take advantage of is something that can be called the “design-stability mechanism.” In short, what this means is its unchanged, standard mundane look allows it to fly further and further under the radar as time has gone on. Audi has managed to update the D5 S8’s look just enough to remain fresh, but has avoided making any “in your face” additions to the model that would give its 563-horsepower nature away.

Most of the D5 S8’s competitors manage to give themselves away quite quickly. Think of the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, for instance. As soon as you set eyes on it, you’re made aware of its true nature. While it’s never claimed or marketed as a sleeper sedan, it looks to be trying to hide at least a little bit of its 668-horsepower, supercharged nature. Its black rear spoiler, black wheels, and black radiator grille are obvious go-faster add-ons that, in its stock form, the Audi S8 lacks.

On top of its reserved look, the D5 Audi S8’s appearance has remained largely unchanged over the past four years, and its sleeper status remains extremely intact. The longer time goes on in between major refreshes, the better for the S8’s sleeper status, because what doesn’t change typically doesn’t attract attention, and what sleeper sedan wants to turn heads wherever it goes? Certainly not the S8.

Slow Sales Are A True Sleeper’s Best Friend

While it’s safe to assume that Audi would love it if every single model it made flew off the shelves faster than they could build them, the S8’s rather poor sales are actually helping its reputation. For the past few years, both the Audi A8 and S8 have been slowly losing customers. As of 2023, both variants of the A8 managed to sell just around 1,487 times. In the first quarter of 2024, only about 487 were sold, as well.

It’s not a new thing for the S8 to sell slowly, either. If we look back to roughly a decade ago, the model only managed to sell approximately 697 times throughout the entirety of 2015, not just during a single quarter. Because of these small numbers, fewer and fewer S8s are out prowling the streets, making spotting one in the wild an increasingly rare occurrence. If you wanted to slowly build excitement around a model across multiple years, that’s how it’s done.

Now, if we take the aforementioned slow sales and combine the S8’s scarcity with the design-stability effect, the result is a world where even car enthusiasts won’t be able to spot the S8 on the road without a second glance. After all, if we rarely see one, and when we do, it’s got a completely standard look apart from a couple of small “S8” badges, how will anyone really learn what one looks like without doing some active studying?

When it comes to other sporty or “sleeper” sedans, such as the CT5-V Blackwing, any passive gearhead will be able to pick one out of a crowded street or parking lot with ease. Of course, this helps the automaker sell cars, but for true sleepers, this isn’t what’s wanted. It needs to fly under the radar so severely that it’s forgotten, and the S8 seems to be extremely adept at that.

The Smart Sleeper Buyer Thinks In Decades

2022 Audi S8 front 3/4 angle in black while parkedAudi USA

Those who prefer “sleepers,” like the Cadillac example we’ve been discussing, aren’t so much concerned with discretion as they are with speed and performance. However, the S8 is tailored to a buyer who doesn’t need anybody to know what they’ve got lurking under the hood. Instead, they’re only interested in knowing they’ve got a 563-horsepower bomb attached to the rightmost foot pedal, and they don’t want others to be in on the secret.

One underlying fact about buying a used D5 S8 — or any Audi, for that matter — is steep depreciation. It’s always hit flagship luxury sedans hardest, and the S8 is no exception. However, this is good news for prospective S8 buyers who are looking to avoid shelling out $130,000 on a new one. According to current market trends, something like a 2022 model-year S8 typically sells for around $63,914, meaning it’s less than half its original price after just four years on the market.

The Audi S8 isn’t for everyone, especially if you’ve got a hankering for some refined flashiness. The S8 is for someone who simply does not want, or care about, anyone knowing what’s going on under their car’s hood until it’s absolutely necessary. The D5 S8’s extreme discretion means its sleeper status will only continue to grow stronger, so long as Audi continues to refuse to reinvent it.
