The Shanghai plant is Tesla’s largest and most utilized production base globally, with annual capacity of about 1 million vehicles.
Late in July, The Wall Street Journal reported that Tesla was considering spinning off its China business, though CEO Elon Musk later denied it, saying the claim “has never even come up in a discussion ever.”
It marks a substantive step in Tesla’s efforts to localize its cabin experience in China.
