Tesla finally launches a bike — but it’s not what fans wanted

Tesla fans have spent years begging the company to build an e-bike. Tesla just launched a bike — and it has no motor, no pedals, and it’s for toddlers.

The new “Balance Bike for Kids” sells for $225 on Tesla’s online shop, and it’s aimed at children aged 2 to 5.

Not exactly the Tesla bike people asked for

Every few years, a survey or a fan rendering reignites the idea of a Tesla two-wheeler. Buyers have repeatedly named Tesla as the electric bike brand they most want to see, and rumors of a “Tesla Model B” e-bike have circulated for nearly as long as the company has made cars.

Elon Musk has poured cold water on the idea more than once, but he also encouraged it at times.

So this is what Tesla fans get instead: a balance bike for kids learning to ride.

What you actually get for $225

The Balance Bike features a lightweight magnesium frame, an adjustable seat with five height levels, and the Tesla wordmark on the side with the “T” logo on the front. There’s no drivetrain — kids push along with their feet, which is the entire point of a balance bike.

Tesla lists a minimum leg length of 13.7 inches and a maximum weight limit of 77 lbs. The tools needed to assemble it are included.

The price next to real balance bikes

At $225, Tesla is charging a premium — but not a completely absurd one compared to the high end of the category.

A perfectly good balance bike runs $50 to $120 from most brands, and the magnesium-framed Hornit AIRO sells for around $73. Tesla’s price only starts to look reasonable next to the specialty premium models: the magnesium-frame Woom 1 goes for $249, and the Strider 14x Sport lists at $220.

In other words, Tesla priced its logo’d toddler bike right alongside the most expensive balance bikes on the market — and above what most parents should ever spend on one.

While we are still waiting for Tesla to make a real e-bike, many other automakers have entered the market, including BMW. As for EV brands, Rivian has spun off an e-bike company called Also, which offers some interesting designs and features.

If you’re a Tesla owner shopping for the family, powering your home and your EV with solar is one of the smartest ways to lock in low energy costs. With electricity rates climbing nearly 10% last year, home solar protects you against future rate increases. And with lease and PPA options, you can go solar with zero upfront cost and start saving immediately. If you want to find the best deal, check out EnergySage. It’s a free service with hundreds of pre-vetted installers competing for your business, so you save 20 to 30% compared to going it alone. No sales calls until you pick an installer.
