What if Land Rover made a car? That’s the question the Range Rover GT is trying to ask and, naturally, answer. The British luxury brand that has spent 80 years building off-roaders is launching a new model called the Range Rover GT, but this is no SUV. It’s the company’s answer to cars like the Porsche Taycan and AMG GT 4-Door, but with a killer feature set they’ll never be able to replicate. Here’s what we know so far about the surprising new model.
The Biggest Surprise From England In A Long Time

It takes a lot for an automaker to surprise us these days, but walking into the room with the camo-covered Range Rover GT has done it. We’ve never seen anything like this new entry into the company’s lineup; its first expansion since the Velar in 2017 and more dramatic than when the Evoque shocked the industry in 2011.
This isn’t just another crossover coupe, one of the SUVs with a slightly sleeker roofline everyone else offers. It really is a vehicle that doesn’t follow an existing segment, combining a ride height closer to a car’s – based on looks at least, since the specs are still under wraps – and a tall car roof height with the interior size of a Range Rover.
Start at the bottom of the windows and look down, and this is clearly a Range Rover. Yes, it’s sleeker, but the body seems to be very familiar. It’s up top where it takes a turn, showing off the larger Range Rover’s boat-tail rear thanks to a shallow sloped roofline and some very horizontal rear glass. Think of it as a big Mini Coupe with four doors. The result is clearly a Range Rover, yet at the same time it feels like a render done by a fan. A very good fan.
It’s a four-seater, or at least the cabin we saw was. A wide center console splits the two passengers and, like the one up front, holds two vented wireless charge ports and a trick translucent cover so you can see if your phone lights up with an alert.
This has a wheelbase that looks as long as a standard Range Rover, and that’s reflected on the inside. Range Rover says rear legroom is class-leading, but that’s meaningless. To put it in real terms, when an extra-tall passenger sits behind an extra-tall driver, the rear passenger has plenty of legroom and a shocking amount of headroom. It’s as roomy as the big SUV in the back, something no other GT can even consider.

An Enormous Cabin Has Retro Touches And Loads Of Luxury

When you first open the door, the look is extremely retro. Classy cues abound, but don’t be fooled by the steering wheel. The thin spoke spanning the wheel looks inspired by a Range Rover Classic, but the original luxury SUV never used a design like it. Keep looking around the interior and there are other retro touches – JLR calls it “architectural” – but it is also up-to-the-second modern in most ways.
This Range Rover has less screen space than any other current model, a rarity in 2026. A thin dashtop screen gives you some of the basic instruments, and the center screen handles the usual duties and will look familiar to Range Rover owners. The dash itself, though, might not be so familiar.
Instead of a typical modern plastic and leather dash, this is a textile. It looks seamless, hiding the airbag deployment area and speakers behind the woven covering, and it’s a breath of fresh air versus the leather and hard plastic that are more typical even in this car’s rarefied airs.
The goal in this vehicle, JLR says, is for “a sanctuary of calm.” Luxury for a legacy brand these days doesn’t mean the highest-tech punching you in the face the way it might have a decade ago. For Range Rover, it means reduced noise of the visual kind, not just the acoustic variety.
It Was Meant To Be Electric Only, But That’s All Changed

When it goes on sale, likely sometime around the end of the year, the Range Rover GT will be an EV. It is built on an all-new platform called EMA, and it will be the first to use it. It’s this new platform that made the new style of vehicle possible for the brand.
But, per a vague, confirmed announcement, this will not be just an EV. The company has shoehorned in the ability to give it hybrid power down the road, and so if the EV doesn’t prove popular, the hybrid almost certainly will. The company hasn’t hinted at pricing or positioning, but we’d guess the EV will be more expensive than the $84,000 Range Rover Sport and probably close to the $113,000 Range Rover, if not more.
It looks like a GT car that’s getting ready for the NFL combine, but that corn-fed body gives it a massive interior. It’s also the only GT car that can do the kind of off-roading a Range Rover can – at least that’s what Range Rover tells us. If you’re thinking that no buyer would ever off-road this, then you’re probably right.
But you’d also be missing the point. Just like that pickup in your driveway that can tow a barge and cross the Rubicon but probably never will, luxury isn’t just about fancy finishes. It’s about having capabilities you might never use, but will also never have to worry about. This new Range Rover car might be the poster child for that.
