Ever since the Porsche 959 came out back in the 80s, the German manufacturer has had a supercar positioned above the 911 to show off what it can do when there are no strings attached. After the Carrera GT and 918, that gaping hole at the top of the lineup may now be filled by the Mission S concept – a mid-engined supercar that is poised to be combustion only and drop-dead gorgeous. But while the exterior is sleek, it’s the interior of the new Mission S concept that may be even more impressive.

The Porsche Mission S concept is slated to be a production car that would sit above the 911 sports car, not a limited-run hypercar like the 918 Spyder was.

The Mission S interio and exterior are also meant to show off a clear new design language for the brand, using retro-inspired elements like the roofline from a 959, according to the company.

Unique to the exterior of the Porsche Mission S is a cooling fan poking out of the rear glass, which is a 917-inspired design choice.

The Porsche Mission S exterior design is meant to be functional, which is why the front duct provides downforce and allow air to escape through the hood. The roof scoop cools the engine.

Most impressive about the exterior of the Porsche Mission S is the rear wing integrated into the curved design element, and the ‘car within a car’ look is meant to be reminiscent of the 911 GT1, which required this look for homologation.

The wheels are inspired by the Porsche 928, and motorized headlights greet you when you unlock the car. It’s still recognizable as a Porsche thanks to the round headlights and flat front end.

Inside the Porsche Mission S, the focus is on the driving experience. The lines within the dash and door are meant to make you feel like you’re extremely low within the chassis.

The digital dials are the only “screen” to be found on the Mission S interior – there are the usual five dials, but they can switch to be focused on only three in certain driving modes.

Unique interior features of the Porsche Mission S include a magnetic phone dock above the knobs that control both the climate and driving functions of the car.

The gear lever controls the PDK, though Porsche is open to the manual transmission and we suspect there may be a brilliant secret hiding in plain site.

The Mission S was revealed on the same pier as the 550 Spider, which the automaker considers its first dedicated sports car that defined the company’s identity.
