The station wagon has been an enthusiast darling in the car world for a couple of decades now, especially in the wake of tall and frequently heavy SUVs and crossovers. As such, when Porsche launched wagon versions of its excellent-driving Taycan electric sedan, car enthusiasts cheered. So, it brings us no pleasure to report that lovely long-roof luxury machines have reached the end of the road in America.

It’s The Same Old Story
The news comes just after Porsche revealed updates to the 2027 Taycan, which include a larger standard battery pack and the ability to shift through a simulated transmission. In the U.S., both the Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo won’t get those upgrades, as they’ve been dropped from the lineup. Multiple reports such as those from The Drive and Kelley Blue Book brought the discontinuation to light, and we confirmed this with a Porsche representative who gave us the following statement:
“Porsche focuses its product portfolio on the wishes of its customers, and in the United States, the Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo body styles of the Taycan played a minor role. It is for this reason that we have decided to discontinue these model variants.” — Porsche representative
In other words, Porsche hasn’t seen enough demand to keep the models on sale. The representative didn’t give exact sales figures for those models, but it’s not hard to imagine that they probably made up a small portion of Taycan sales. The problem is that Porsche doesn’t sell many Taycans as a whole either. It was the worst performer of all Porsche’s models last year with 4,142 sales, which was down from last year and behind the Panamera, which lost its wagon variant a few years ago, with Porsche citing flagging sales. Sales are looking even worse for the Taycan for this year, with just 607 finding homes this quarter.

In the end, the Taycan wagons had roughly the same lifespan as the Panamera’s. Porsche introduced the Panamera Sport Turismo for the 2018 model year, and its journey ended five years later in 2023. The first year of the Taycan wagon started with the Cross Turismo in the 2021 model year, five years ago.

It’s Not Dead Everywhere
Depending on your perspective, this part of the story will either be some solace or salt on the wounds. While Porsche isn’t selling Taycan wagons in America anymore, the body style hasn’t been completely eliminated. Canada will still offer the Cross Turismo on the Taycan 4S. Even more variations will continue to be available in other markets such as those throughout Europe. Evidently there are enough buyers in those markets to justify keeping the wagon around.

BMW Could Offer More Wagons To ‘Completely Different’ American Buyers
Company SVP Bernd Koerber says that the M5 Touring’s popularity in the US was a pleasant surprise.
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
The news of Porsche dropping its wagon is interesting, as it comes at a time when other luxury automakers have seen some success with special high-performance wagons in the US, namely Audi with the RS 6 and BMW with the M5 Touring. One possible contributing factor is that the handful of enthusiasts interested in a high-performance wagon aren’t particularly interested in having an EV. Each of those German wagons offers a high-horsepower V8, even if one of them is also a hybrid. That would also bear out with Porsche seeing a tepid reception for some of its other EV models, enough to reconsider its initial plans for an electric 718. At least in the case of the M5, there’s also likely some novelty factor, too, as it’s still fairly new and unusual for American BMW buyers.
