Porsche Has Strong Words Regarding The Taycan’s Rumored Death

A new report from Germany says that Porsche is planning to discontinue the Taycan electric sedan. Porsche, though, says something a little different. Some things might be happening in the Taycan world that dial back the electric performance car, but its future isn’t as dark as some sources claim.

The Taycan, rumored to be ending production, should stick around for at least a little while longer.

Taycan EV Could Be A One-Generation Wonder

German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche reported that Porsche planned to drop the Taycan from its lineup, with a phase-out starting very soon. The report, which cited insider sources, said that the company was originally considering an immediate stop, but decided to do it slowly instead.

The report says the Taycan would be discontinued no later than 2030. It claims that the Porsche works council has agreed to the move, though it has not been formalized yet. The report also said that Porsche had been considering moving production of the car from Stuttgart to Leipzig, where it would be built with the Panamera and the Macan EV instead of with the 911.

CarBuzz contacted Porsche directly about this. A spokesperson confirmed plans to streamline the Taycan model range. In fact, the process has already started, with the Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo wagons disappearing from US dealers after the 2026 model year.

However, the Taycan is not going away as Wirtschaftswoche claimed. In a statement emailed to CarBuzz, the spokesperson advised that “streamlining the model range does not necessarily mean discontinuing entire model lines. For the Taycan, we will continue to reduce the number of variants in order to lower complexity.”

Taycan Stays, But For How Long?

To put the final nail in the proverbial coffin, Porsche denied the Taycan was going away, at least not soon.

“We currently have no plans to discontinue the Taycan in the short term. We have invested significantly in the model and will continue to monitor how demand develops.”

The Taycan was first launched in 2020, and Porsche expected big things. Sales peaked at around 41,000 in 2021, but have fallen to well under 20,000 per year in 2025 and this year isn’t looking better. While that peak was nearly double the 718 sports cars and around 30% more than the Panamera sedan, the Panamera has been steady at around 30,000 while the Taycan fell. The Panamera also shares much more with other Porsche and Audi vehicles, lowering costs.

As far as the future, the Panamera and Taycan models could converge. New CEO Michael Leiters is looking to trim costs, and reports have suggested the next generation could offer gas and an EV on the same platform. Possibly with the same name.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

More varieties of a single model than Baskin Robbins has flavors is Porsche’s thing. When models are selling well, it makes loads of sense and is an easy way to boost profits. When they aren’t, having 11 different Taycan variants is more of a manufacturing problem. An expensive manufacturing problem. Cutting some of the fat makes supporting the model a little bit easier, and that could help keep the electric rocketship alive.
