Lucid’s next big move is starting to come into focus, and it could be one of the brand’s most important launches yet. According to recently surfaced patent images filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, the American EV startup appears to be preparing its third model, expected to be called the Lucid Cosmos. The upcoming electric SUV is set to slot below the larger Gravity and give Lucid a more attainable entry in the fast-growing electric crossover space.

The patent filing was submitted under Atieva Inc., the original name Lucid used when it was founded in 2007 before becoming Lucid Motors in 2016. While the images are not officially labeled as the Cosmos, the design closely matches earlier teaser material from Lucid. InsideEVs also reported that the patent images appear to match the Cosmos prototype shown privately during Lucid’s Investor Day event in March, giving us a strong indication that this is the SUV headed for production.

From the images, the Cosmos carries plenty of Lucid DNA without looking like a scaled-down copy of the Air sedan or Gravity SUV. The front end is low and clean, with slim lighting elements tucked beneath bold Lucid branding. A trapezoidal lower opening appears to incorporate sensors for driver-assistance features, while the sculpted hood and flowing side lines help give the SUV a futuristic but restrained look.

The most striking design element is the roofline, which drops sharply toward the rear and gives the Cosmos a more coupe-like stance than many traditional compact SUVs. A spoiler sits above the rear glass, and the taillights are extremely thin, although they do not stretch across the back like the light bars seen on the Air and Gravity. Instead, a large Lucid badge sits prominently on the rear hatch, keeping the branding unmistakable.

Aerodynamics will likely play a major role in the Cosmos story. Lucid has already said it is targeting a drag coefficient of 0.22, which would be impressively slippery for an SUV. That focus on efficiency fits with the brand’s reputation for extracting strong range from its EV platforms. The Cosmos is expected to use an 800-volt architecture for fast charging and could deliver more than 300 miles of driving range, making it a serious contender for buyers who want premium EV tech in a smaller package.

Although Lucid describes the new platform as mid-size, the Cosmos is expected to compete more directly with compact electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y and the upcoming Rivian R2. Lucid is targeting a starting price under $50,000 when sales begin in 2027, which would bring the brand within reach of a much wider audience. With a full reveal expected this summer, the Cosmos could be the model that helps Lucid move beyond high-end luxury EVs and into a more competitive mainstream luxury space.
