Land Rover’s Cheapest SUV Is Getting Canceled

The SUV world is nothing if not dynamic. It has to be – this is easily the largest automotive segment in the world, and within this one massive segment are numerous sub-segments. Do you want a large three-row SUV? How about one with a sleeker “coupe” roofline? Or maybe you just want something small and reasonably affordable but still with plenty of SUV swagger? On that last part, there will soon be one less option for buyers to choose from.

The news comes from Jaguar Land Rover – a company that really needs all the models it can get right now. On the Jaguar side of things, there are precisely zero new vehicles on sale and the only one in development is the polarizing Type 01, a flagship electric sedan launching amid waning EV demand in the US. Land Rover is literally carrying the company, and now, it’s least-expensive trim is going away. Not that it was necessarily an affordable trim, but still. The price of entry into the Land Rover world is going up.

The Discovery Sport Has A Departure Date

The Discovery Sport model is being canceled after more than 11 years on the market as the entry-level Land Rover product. The news was confirmed by Autocar, and a cutoff date has been set.

“Discovery Sport production will end in December 2026, in line with normal product life cycles. As part of this transition, there will be a managed sunset of manufacturing ahead of this date for certain markets.”

The Disco Sport is already dropped from ordering systems throughout Europe, but it’s not entirely gone just yet. It’s still available to order in the UK. It appears that the Discovery Sport’s removal from ordering systems coinciding with the European Union’s (EU) General Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2) updated rules is meaningful. How long will the order books stay open, and does Land Rover have any replacement in mind?

As the UK is no longer part of the European Union, GSR2 doesn’t apply there and the Discovery Sport can remain on sale. It’s probable that orders in the UK will carry on as long as they can be fulfilled by the factory before its production ends in December 2026. Then, it looks like production space will be freed up for the new Range Rover GT, which surprised just about everyone by not being an SUV.

Range Rover is shifting toward new hybrid and all-electric vehicles, bringing into question how long other aging models with no next generation announced will last, including the full-size Discovery and the Range Rover Evoque.

Why Let The Discovery Sport Die?

The Land Rover Discovery Sport went into production in 2014, and was given a heavy update in 2014, moving it onto a platform that supports engines with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

JLR has updated its other models to comply with GSR2 rules, but it probably doesn’t make sense to do the same for the Discovery Sport when it comes to the spreadsheets. While the Discovery Sport started out as a big selling vehicle for Land Rover, it’s now the brand’s weakest selling model. As it’s also an entry-level model for a luxury vehicle brand, profit margins are likely already thin, so spending heavily on development and manufacturing won’t make sense.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters

Land Rover is clearly going into a reinvention phase along with Jaguar. While it’s unlikely the Range Rover and Defender will go away, as they are heritage names and tentpole models, it looks like Land Rover will trim away the derivatives as it transitions. That will make way for whole new models like the Range Rover GT.

Given how far Land Rover has strayed from its utilitarian 4×4 roots, the Range Rover GT looks like a cleaner break with tradition. Range Rover’s last expansion of its lineup was the Velar in 2017, which was a crossover best described as a Range Rover lite. The Range Rover GT shows that Land Rover is looking to become a more general luxury brand rather than a luxury 4×4 brand.

This will disappoint traditionalist enthusiasts, but the segment it all but invented is now swamped with competition, and off-road ability is no longer a major selling point. As long as the Range Rover and Defender are still best-in-class off-road, Land Rover should find itself free to do interesting things moving forward.
