Lamborghini’s 1,050-HP Revuelto SV Hybrid V12 Killed The Manual Supercar For Good

Ask anyone what they think a Lamborghini is about, and they’ll probably say it’s about theater. The sound, the fighter-jet interior, and the sharp angles on the exterior make it all look like it’s come from the future. There’s one piece of personality that has escaped modern raging bulls though, and that’s the manual transmission. With almost every other supercar company feeling the pressure to add stick shift in 2026, Lamborghini says it’s not going to follow the crowd.

The days of running through your own gears with a naturally aspirated V12 behind you might be over for Lambo fans, and that’s mainly down to packaging. The latest Revuelto SV is exciting in all the right ways, but its layout means a manual might not be possible. Here’s why hybrid power has meant the stick shift has taken a back seat.

For Lamborghini, It’s A Packaging Problem

The Lamborghini Revuelto flips Lamborghini tradition. Literally. In other V12 flagship models (apart from the Miura in the 1960s), the gearbox was placed in front of the engine, between the passengers. In the Revuelto, however, the middle of the cabin is taken up by the 3.8 kWh battery pack that provides power for the hybrid function. Because of this, engineers turned the engine 180 degrees, so the rear of the engine now faces the rear of the car.

The eight-speed transmission is now planted transversely (sideways) at the rearmost point of the car, which is similar to how the Lamborghini Miura was laid out. That car also had a transverse engine layout to keep the wheelbase as short as possible, so it simply made sense to match the gearbox. Lamborghini mainly decided to do this as it wanted the batteries, which are the heaviest part of the car, to be situated in the middle for perfect weight distribution.

This layout of the batteries in the cabin means there isn’t much space to fit a gear linkage, and if there was, there’s a whole engine in between the driver and the gearbox. Fitting a manual transmission would be extremely expensive, as there would have to be multiple linkages and a specialized unit separate from any other cars in the Volkswagen-Audi Group. There is also an electric motor within the gearbox, meaning there isn’t much space back there for gear connections.

    Hybrid Manuals Are Already Tricky

Customer demand for hybrid powertrains and automatic transmissions in the mass-market segment have been growing together, meaning automakers have simply not put in the resources to develop a real manual hybrid, as there may not be demand for one. An automatic transmission also already makes more sense in a hybrid, as it allows the engineers to perfectly tune when the electric motor kicks in at low speeds and when to turn on the engine.

There’s also the case of hybrid motor torque. Electric motors make instantaneous torque, so this puts a lot of pressure on the clutch and causes premature wear. Pair this with how expensive it already is to buy and maintain a supercar, and the use case simply isn’t there. With an automatic, manufacturers are able to preserve the life of the clutch much more easily by taking the human out of the equation. The change from engine off at low speed to engine ignition while moving could be jerky if it has to be done manually.

    Lambo Prefers Engineering Theater Anyway

The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ was designed to be the most complete supercar… in the world.Lamborghini

While Lamborghini is mainly known for its incredible engines, sounds, and designs, there is some serious engineering going on behind the scenes in the new Revuelto. The dual-clutch gearbox was developed specifically for this car, and at 425 lbs, it’s lighter than the Lamborghini Huracan’s seven-speed automatic. The two front electric motors mean there’s no need for a reverse gear, either.

The Aventador that came before was criticized for its seven-speed single-clutch transmission as the rest of the industry moved towards dual-clutch systems. Lamborghini’s main justification was that every shift felt like an occasion, giving the car a gunshot-like feeling when rowing through gears. There have been rumors that the Revuelto’s shifts are tuned to give you a slap in the neck when you change gear to make it more involving. Lamborghini would lose that tunability if it went manual.

The Manual Supercar Trend Is Here, Though

Lamborghini is becoming increasingly pressured to include a manual supercar in its lineup as its rivals are looking to the past to make their cars more involving. The best example is Hennessey, which is moving away from 2,000-horsepower hypercars and will now be building an 800-horsepower naturally aspirated GT car that uses a real six-speed. This automaker decided that while numbers and statistics are fun to chase, they have become less meaningful in the electric age.

Porsche has always been the go-to sports/supercar for a manual transmission, and the company has just announced that it’ll allow customers to spec a six-speed manual into the Carrera S. The stick shift GT3 is still available, though. McLaren is about to also produce a mid-engined pure combustion supercar with a real manual transmission. Mate Rimac has also expressed interest in a manual V16 Tourbillon. Three-pedaled poster cars are back.

    Could Lambo Copy Ferrari?

    Ferrari 12Cilindri ManualeFerrari

Ferrari shook up the supercar industry with a simulated manual transmission earlier this year. It’s a version of the usual eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that’s used in many modern Ferrari models, but this one allows you to control the first six gears through a gated manual and a clutch pedal. It has no connection to the gearbox in reality, and the car can be switched back to automatic whenever you’d like, so it’s a great middle ground between driver connection, everyday ease, and speed.

[The manual gearbox] is mostly for collectibles, and today we don’t have any plans to do so.

–Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO

This tech is currently only available in the 12Cilindri Manuale, a limited-run model that rivals will certainly be watching closely. If it proves to be a success, limited models from other companies may follow, although Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann is apprehensive about fitting this sort of function into its cars. Porsche is interested in Ferrari’s system, and since it is a company under the same VAG brand as Lamborghini, there is a chance that the teams will look to each other.

Ferrari’s manual transmission has been fitted to its V12 grand tourer, a segment Lamborghini has said it is developing a rival for. There is very little hope that it will come with a manual, but it fits better in the Ferrari application, as there is no hybrid system and the focus is on sporting luxury, whereas Lamborghini is mainly focused on motorsport-derived technology and the leading edge of performance.

The Last Lamborghini Manuals Are Iconic

The final manual Lamborghini models are now, of course, rising in value. The final big V12 flagship to be produced with three pedals is the Murcielago LP670-4 SV, and it’s said to be one of the rarest variants of Lambo available. Only an estimated 186 total cars were produced, and of those, only five are said to be manuals. The last of those just sold at auction for an undisclosed amount, but it is estimated to be anywhere from $2-3 million.

The final production Lamborghini manual actually comes in the form of the 5.2L V10-equipped Gallardo. You can get a handful of these baby Lambo models with a stick, although many were equipped with a now-outdated E-Gear system. The Huracan was praised for retaining the V10 when it replaced the Gallardo in 2015, but it removed the stick shift, disappointing many enthusiasts. A small, light V10 supercar with a manual is rising in value and desirability, so prospective buyers would do well to act sooner rather than later.
