Jeep’s Controversial New Off-Roader Is Expensive, But At Least It Has More Horsepower

The first electric doors-off Jeep hasn’t even hit dealers yet, and buyers are already getting an unexpected bonus. The Jeep Recon will have Wrangler 392-crushing power and acceleration, and now it seems like it will be even more powerful than Jeep anticipated.

Plus, some buyers might even find a deal on one, though that’s going to depend on how desperate the dealer is to get the electric off-roader off the lot.

The 2026 Jeep Recon is still on the transporter from Mexico, but dealers in the US now know what they’re getting first and roughly when it will arrive. It turns out that what they’re getting is just a little bit more than what we had expected.

Early spec sheets from Stellantis said that the electric SUV would deliver 650 horsepower along with 620 pound-feet of torque. Now, according to Jeep’s media site, it can put out 670 horsepower.

Both figures are impressive, though more is clearly better. A standard V6 Wrangler delivers 285 horsepower, and the gigantic V8-powered Wrangler 392 makes just 470.

What hasn’t improved is the Jeep’s estimated range. Originally, Jeep had estimated 250 miles, and the figure has since dropped to 240. Early customers will get even less, because the Moab trim, the only one available at launch, delivers just 222. It has taller gears in the rear differential to deliver extra torque and 33-inch tires to clear obstacles, but both cut into the distance you can travel before you need to find a plug.

The first 2026 Jeep Recon Moab 4xe models should roll into dealers soon. There are still fewer than 50 listed on sites like Cars.com, but at least one dealer is launching the Recon with a discount.

Is An Early Deal A Bad Sign?

Van Nuys Jeep, for example, is offering $500 off the MSRP of a $67,590 model. That’s offset by about $110 in fees, but it is still a good deal for a brand-new model.

It’s an oddity, though, at least for now. Other dealers are asking for MSRP plus their usual fees. Those fees, though, can boost the amount you pay substantially and vary greatly from store to store.

At this point, it’s still hard to know what dealers will do when the SUVs hit the lot. Or what customers will do when it comes to buying them. We expect discounts sooner or later, largely because it seems that’s just what Jeep and the other Stellantis brands do. A new Wrangler, for example, is advertised with up to a $4,000 bonus cash allowance. Dealers are advertising them with up to $10,000 off depending on model, trim, and location.

Also, we’ve seen Dodge Charger Daytona prices plummet because that audience simply doesn’t want an electric muscle car. Will devoted off-road Jeep people go the same direction?

Jeep’s existing EV, the Wagoneer S, has not posted high sales figures, and the discounts are massive. A quick look shows multiple units for more than $20,000 off, and some have been sitting for more than a year. The Recon will likely be more popular, and most trims will be cheaper, but we’ll have to wait and see.

An extra 20 horsepower is a nice bonus, but it’s the kind of thing that’s possible with EVs that was much less likely with gas engines. Automakers can quickly implement new software that optimizes cooling or makes other changes that suddenly give the vehicle a little extra.

Look for the new Jeep Recon to reach dealership showrooms any day now.
