Spanish renewable energy and electricity giant Iberdrola is constructing its first battery energy storage project in the US as utilities race to add more storage to strengthen the grid.
The company is building the Shutler battery project in Gilliam County, in north-central Oregon. When it comes online in 2027, it will have a power capacity of 41 megawatts (MW) and store up to 82 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity.
The 41 MW/82 MWh system is a two-hour battery, meaning it can deliver its full 41 MW output for about two hours before it needs to recharge. That’s a common duration for utility-scale batteries that shift excess renewable energy to periods of higher demand and help stabilize the grid.
Avangrid, Iberdrola’s US subsidiary, already has around 3,000 MW of generation capacity in the Pacific Northwest.
Battery storage has become one of the fastest-growing segments of the US power sector because it helps utilities squeeze more value out of renewable energy while improving grid reliability.
