    Honda And Hyundai Chased Turbos, But Toyota Built A Bulletproof 50-MPG Camry Instead

    Turbocharging has swept through the automotive industry like a wave – Ford, Honda, Hyundai, and virtually every other mainstream manufacturer have made it their default technology. Toyota, however, is saying no – at least when it comes to one of the bestselling cars in America.

    When it comes to purchasing a car that will simply get the job done, opting for some form of Toyota is generally seen as the most sensible choice. Be it a Corolla should you need a compact runabout, a Sienna if you need a practical minivan, or perhaps a Camry should you need a larger sedan to make everyday errands easier, one of the Japanese brand’s offerings will serve you well. A key ingredient to this lies in how Toyota designs its engines for its more economy-focused range.

    The Hybrid System That Makes a Turbo Unnecessary

    For most manufacturers, including Toyota when considering vehicles like the GR Corolla, turbocharging is seen as the best way of combining power and fuel economy in a compact and easier-to-package unit. Such engines have practically taken over from the traditional naturally aspirated power plants used in more affordable models, since they can be made more powerful and more fuel-efficient at a smaller displacement than NA engines require.

    Toyota hasn’t followed this trend with its Camry, however, with the marque instead opting to pair an NA inline-four engine with an electric motor across the entire Camry range. While the engine produces 184 horsepower on its own, the electric motor contributes an additional 41 hp, for a combined output of 225 hp.

    Opting for the all-wheel drive model — which adds a second electric motor at the rear axle — brings total output to 232 hp. Thanks to the electric motors, the Camry’s NA I4 receives a meaningful power boost without requiring a turbocharger.

    To improve fuel efficiency, the Camry’s engine utilizes Atkinson cycle technology, which essentially allows the intake valve to remain open for longer during compression. This allows more energy to be extracted from the combustion process, as well as leading to less heat being wasted. The drawback is that less power is produced during the process, which is why Atkinson engines are typically paired with hybrid systems, as the lost power and throttle response can be supplemented by an electric motor. Traditional non-hybrid engines run the Otto cycle, which is less efficient but does not result in such power losses.

    Alongside its performance credentials, the Camry’s hybrid powertrain delivers a combined fuel economy figure of 51 MPG, making it more affordable to operate on a daily basis. The Camry also avoids turbo lag, an inherent drawback of turbocharged engines.

    Why Rivals Can Undercut the Camry’s Starting Price

    Toyota’s approach differs from that of its rivals, such as Ford, Honda, and Hyundai. While the Ford Escape, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata are available in hybrid form with similar Atkinson cycle designs, they can also be had with non-hybrid turbocharged Otto-cycle engines, unlike the Camry. This gives buyers a more affordable entry point, since these base models are generally a thousand dollars or so less expensive than the entry-level Camry LE.

    And when you look at the performance gap between a Camry and a Sonata N-Line, the price difference starts to feel like a bargain – unless Toyota has a very good reason for holding the line.

    The primary advantage here is making sportier and faster vehicles available to the public. A good example is the Ford Escape ST-Line Select, which features a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, leaving it well ahead of the fastest Camry available. While the Toyota takes 6.8 seconds to reach 60 mph in its most powerful AWD form, the Ford can complete the same sprint in just 5.8 seconds.

    The Camry’s disadvantage grows further when considering the N-Line variant of the Sonata sedan. It comes with an upgraded version of Hyundai’s turbocharged 2.5-liter Smartstream I4, which sends 290 hp to the front axle, along with comfortably over 300 lb-ft of torque. The result of this is a strong 0-60 mph effort of 5.4 seconds, well over a second quicker than the Camry. At the same time, turbocharging allowed these manufacturers to achieve this level of performance without sacrificing too much fuel economy.

    For a driver who values acceleration, the Camry’s hybrid system simply cannot compete – and Toyota knows it. But Toyota isn’t building the Camry to win drag races. It’s building it to win something harder to market: a decade of trouble-free ownership.

    The Hidden Cost Of Turbocharging That Toyota Is Betting Buyers Will Notice

    One of these reasons is that Toyota is positioning the Camry as a car that perfectly complements the daily lives of most Americans, prioritizing fuel efficiency above all else. Offering the hybrid powertrain across the entire range means that, regardless of trim level, from the base model to the sportier Nightshade variant, buyers get a car that will deliver significant fuel savings compared to similarly priced turbocharged models from rival manufacturers. And even though the Camry is not quite as quick as its turbocharged competition, a 6.8-second 0-60 mph time is far from slow.

    The primary reason Toyota is staying away from turbocharging with the Camry is reliability. While turbocharged engines provide impressive performance for their size, one drawback is how hard they must work to generate that output. For one, turbochargers generate significant heat, forcing the engine to run warmer than it would in naturally aspirated form.

    Furthermore, the extra power produced forces the smaller engine to run harder, which accelerates internal component wear over time. This causes issues to emerge much sooner than they would in a less stressed engine, such as the NA units found in the Camry.

    An electric motor runs alongside the internal combustion engine in the Camry, reducing much of the load placed on it during acceleration. As a result, the engine’s internal components experience significantly less stress, allowing the power plant to last much longer before wear-and-tear-related issues arise. The same is true of the transmission, which must work considerably harder to transfer the power from a turbocharged engine to the driven wheels.

    Since Toyota prioritizes building dependable vehicles above pretty much anything else, only offering hybrid powertrains improves the level of reliability across the whole Camry range. Including a turbocharged option would only introduce the risk of reduced reliability, which could ultimately damage the nameplate’s reputation.

    Well-Maintained Camrys Can Last For Well Over 300,000 Miles

    Based on the available evidence, Toyota’s approach appears to have been effective. Its A25A-FKS engine is built to last from the outset, with engineering choices such as a lightweight but strong aluminum alloy used to cast the engine block, cylinder heads, and piston heads. Additionally, the cylinder liners boast an iron coating to help absorb heat and reduce the chance of damage, while the connecting rods and crankshaft are crafted from ultra-strong forged metal.

    Other materials throughout the engine, including various metals and plastics, were also selected to meet the standards used in performance cars, ensuring long-term durability. Its single-speed CVT gearbox is built to be similarly strong, and the result is a powertrain that can exceed 400,000 miles before needing replacement.

    This approach is a key reason why CarEdge estimates owners will spend only around $4,500 to keep the car running well over 10 years of service, putting it comfortably under the class average.

    When combined with the impressive fuel economy made possible by its powertrain and its competitive base MSRP, it is not hard to see why the Camry remains the bestselling sedan on sale in the US. Toyota set aside turbocharging in an effort to prioritize dependability, and as its sterling reputation and strong sales figures illustrate, it is a decision that continues to pay off.
