When capability and reliability matter the most, choosing the right heavy-duty truck becomes critical. With so many late-model options like the Ford F-250 Super Duty and the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, it can be a daunting task to make the right decision for your needs and for long-term reliability.
Buyers want more than just raw power; they need proven durability and the confidence that their truck is in it for the long haul. The heavy-duty truck market is extremely competitive, so here’s a look at the most reliable heavy-duty trucks available right now.
It is imperative to have your truck checked to see if it’s affected by any of the listed NHTSA recalls. These heavy-duty trucks have been selected based on reliability records, recalls, and consumer-reported dependability.
7.3-liter Godzilla Powered Ford Super Duty
The Godzilla Reigns Supreme
The undisputed king of heavy-duty truck reliability handily goes to the Godzilla-powered Ford Super Duty trucks. Ford has had somewhat of a rocky past with its gas engines since they got rid of the old-school push-rod V8s and gave us the Triton series of engines, including the widely criticized 5.4-liter V8 and the 6.8-liter V10. Since it took over as Ford’s heavy-duty gas engine in 2020, 7.3-liter powered Super Duty trucks have earned an average 78 out 100 for reliability from J.D. Power. According to Car Complaints, the Super Duty has only received a small number of complaints, most of which are electrical problems.
What should also be noted are the transmission problems, and subsequent recalls involving the early (2020–2022) 10R140 ten-speed automatic transmission. The issues primarily involve the CDF drum bushing, valve body, torque convertor and sometimes planetary gears. The 7.3-liter Godzilla has seen some camshaft and lifter failure. However, most of these failures have been seen in trucks from 2020 to 2022 or from fleet and commercial vehicles with spotty maintenance records and high idle times.

With its forged internals and classic push-rod design, the 7.3-liter was intentionally engineered for work and longevity. The 7.3-liter shirks the complexities of later-model direct-injection fuel systems, and sticks with its simple port injection fuel system, further proving its functional simplicity and robust construction. Seeing as the Godzilla engine is only six years old, there aren’t a ton of reports of this engine reaching over 200k yet. However, its straightforward design characteristics and prevailing satisfaction from Super Duty owners on popular Ford truck enthusiast forums are trending for high mileage ownership.
6.6-liter Gas V8 Powered Chevrolet Silverado HD/GMC Sierra HD
No DFM, No Worries
GM’s most reliable heavy-duty trucks are the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD twins – specifically the trucks with the L8T 6.6-liter V8. From 2020 to 2023, the L8T was paired with the 6L90 six-speed automatic. For the 2024 model year and later, it was mated to the even stronger 10L90 ten-speed automatic transmission that also pairs with the Duramax diesel. Engineered to withstand the test of time and hard work, the L8T was designed to prioritize durability and simplicity.
This is evident with its cast iron block and forged rotating assembly. The 6.6-liter is fortified to deliver many trouble-free miles and get the job done. These trucks have a few recalls according to the NHTSA website, including rear fuel pump failures and steering gear shaft breakage. It has also been documented that the 6.6-liter does suffer from some oil consumption issues while under heavy loads. According to RepairPal, the GM twins score completely averagely, earning three out of five for overall reliability. These trucks carry an annual average repair bill of $936 dollars to maintain (due to the vague details of this report from RepairPal, some of these costs may be associated with the diesel engine), and have a lower annual repair frequency than its Ram and Ford counterparts.
It’s worth pointing out that the top contenders for reliability at this point are two pretty basic, large push-rod V8 engines – no forced induction, just good old-fashioned cubic inches with very basic architecture and valve trains. Is there a pattern here?
6.7-liter Power Stroke Powered Ford Super Duty Trucks
Fords Second Most Reliable HD Truck
Diesel enthusiasts and Ford fans know that the Navistar 7.3-liter V8 was a tough act to follow. And in this case, the third time was the charm. The 6.7-liter Power Stroke was designed, tested and manufactured in house by Ford and has been an extremely successful engine. The new “all Ford” Power Stroke engine was first implemented for the 2011 model year trucks after the failures of the 6.0 and 6.4-liter Power Stroke engines developed by International-Navistar for Ford.
The diesel-powered Super Duty scores well with J.D. Power, consistently earning a score near or above 80 out of 100 for reliability. However, RepairPal is not as generous. This could be because of the somewhat problematic 10R140 transmission, and the EGR and DEF problems that plague most diesel trucks, including the Super Duty. Additionally, the Bosch CP4.2 diesel injection pump has caused many issues for not only Ford, but GM and Ram as well.

Ford continues to use this often problematic injection pump on the Power Stroke. It’s important to note that for the 2020–2022 models, there is a recall that directly addresses the failing injection pump. However, at this point, there are some workarounds, so the diesel-powered Super Duty remains some of the most reliable heavy-duty trucks currently available.
The diesel-powered Super Duty trucks have the same recalls as the Godzilla-powered trucks. These include rear axle fracturing, Integrated Trailer Module communication loss, and windshield wiper arms breaking or detaching. But, through all that, the late-model Super Duty with the Power Stroke has been refined, with many of the bugs worked out. The most reliable trucks are the 2023 and newer models.
6.6-liter Duramax Powered Chevrolet Silverado HD/GMC Sierra HD
GM’s Other Reliable Heavy-duty Trucks
Both the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado have proven themselves to be very reliable, even after the abuse they go through, as can be seen in television commercials. Like the other diesels on this list, the Duramax is capable of achieving some seriously high miles, without the assistance of a tow truck, but regular maintenance is required. The latest version of the Duramax – the L5P – was first available for the 2017 model year and, with some, is considered a “clean slate” design.
The Duramax trucks ranging from 2017 to 2019 used the Allison six-speed transmission, which has been associated with harsh or delayed shifting due to calibration issues. For the 2020 model year, the switch was made to the Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, but even the 10-speed has some issues. The NHTSA lists a recall for a transmission control valve malfunction regarding the 2020–2022 model year trucks. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed as it can cause the rear wheels to suddenly lock up.

Like the other diesels on this list, the GM twins are no strangers to issues related to DEF and EGR systems. EGR cooler leakage and clogging along with sensor failures, stuck or clogged EGR valves, and carbon buildup. The earlier trucks also had problems with sensor failures, sticking injectors, turbocharger failure and software issues. Despite these significant EGR/DEF problems, the heavy-duty GM twins packing the mighty L5P Duramax remains a reliable truck, earning a three out of five from RepairPal.
When in the market for a Duramax-powered Chevrolet or GMC truck, look to the 2024 and newer models for the best and most reliable ownership experience.
6.7-liter Cummins Powered Ram 2500 / 3500
The Best 2500 Diesel Truck?
Of course, a conversation centered on which 2500 truck is most reliable simply cannot be had without mentioning the Cummins-powered Ram 2500/3500 trucks. Ram (formerly Dodge Ram) trucks equipped with the Cummins engine have a long-standing history of reliability and longevity, with many owners documenting well over 500,000 miles. Of course, this doesn’t happen without a great maintenance routine and staying on top of repairs. The Ram did hit a rough patch in 2019 when Cummins implemented the use of the controversial Bosch CP4.2 diesel injection pump.
It didn’t take long to realize the gravity of this mistake. For the 2021 model year, Cummins reverted to the time-tested and ultra-reliable Bosch CP3 injection pump. For the 2025 model year, the new Bosch CP8 injection pump has been used with much success. Although the Ram earns an 81 out of 100 for reliability from J.D. Power, Ram trucks are known for having weak automatic transmissions.

The problem is the 68RFE transmission that was used until the 2025 model year. Known for torque convertor failure, overheating, numerous valve body and clutch pack problems, the 68RFE was a constant sore spot for Ram trucks. However, the ZF TorqueFlight eight-speed transmission is the hopefully reliable automatic transmission that replaced the 68RFE for the 2025 model year. Long-term reliability information is not yet available as the new transmission is only in its second year, but we will be watching.

Other problems plague Ram trucks as well, including a host of recalls. A look at the NHTSA website indicates software glitch problems for both ECM, ABS and stability control systems. Further, later model Ram trucks have recalls for an instrument cluster software error, a transmission fluid leak from the dipstick tube (older 68RFE trans only), and of course, a recall dedicated to the Bosch CP4.3 injection pump failure. Because of the new ZF TorqueFlight and the updated Bosch CP8 injection pump, the 2025 and newer trucks are the ones to buy if you’re in the market for a Ram truck.
The latest ranking from J.D. Power puts the Ram at 81 out of 100 for reliability, while Repair Pal notes that the average annual repair costs for the Ram are at a lofty $1,070 per year ($134 higher than the average for trucks in its class). Even though it may not be the cheapest to keep on the road, its annual repair frequency is within the average and comparable to its competition. Ram trucks owe their reliability almost entirely to the 6.7-liter Cummins engine. Unfortunately for the brand, this has always been the case and, judging by current transgressions of the truck surrounding the Cummins engine, this may continue to be the pattern for Ram going forward.
