    GMC’s 481-HP V8 Tows 4,100 Pounds Less Than Its 402-HP Sibling

In the case of GM’s new 6.6-liter L78 V8, bigger definitely isn’t better. Its newborn smaller sibling, the 5.7-liter L76 V8, manages to pull almost two tons more than its big brother. Alongside the new Chevy Silverado 1500, the redesigned 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 offers the new engines, both of which belong to GM’s new sixth-gen LS-based Small-Block V8 engine family.

Towing weirdness aside, both the L76 and L78 engines mechanically resemble the V8s we were used to seeing a couple of decades ago. That sounds like a good thing when it comes to simplicity and reliability. However, with GM’s ever-present desire to pack more and more tech features into all of its models, the potential reliability boost granted by an old-school engine may very well be negated by loads of technology features that could go wrong. For the typical, hardworking pickup truck buyer, what matters more: digital luxury, or long-term dependability and towing capacity?

Simply Put: GMC’s Bigger V8 Isn’t The Best Towing Option

General Motors Generation VI V8 Engine Family for TrucksGeneral Motors

As you can probably guess, the smaller 5.7-liter L76 V8 produces a lot less power than the larger L78 power plant. Its 402 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque is all it can muster, whereas the 6.6-liter engine ratchets things up to 481 hp and 502 lb-ft. For some topsy-turvy reason, though, Sierra 1500s outfitted with the larger L78 can only tow 9,400 lbs. The 5.7-liter V8, on the other hand? Properly equipped models can pull 13,500 lbs.

It sounds ridiculous, but there’s more at play underneath a pickup truck’s body that goes into maximum towing capacity than sheer engine power. For one thing, a truck needs a suspension capable of handling 13,500 lbs. The 6.6-liter L78 V8 is offered as an option on higher-spec and off-road-centric Sierra 1500 models, such as the AT4X and the Denali/Denali Ultimate grades.

As for the AT4X, it’s wholly designed to eat up hard-to-ford trails, dunes, and any other driving surfaces experienced when going off the beaten path. This means its suspension needs to be softer and have a greater degree of travel, making towing capacity a secondary concern. As for the Denali grades, Sierra 1500s sporting those are fitted with a whole host of luxury equipment, including an Adaptive Ride Control suspension with active dampers. Its luxury-oriented ride means it’s simply not up to the task of towing 13,500 lbs, as it’s specifically suited for highway comfort.

So why did GM build a more powerful engine that tows less? The answer reveals something surprising about where GMC thinks the truck market is heading.

Why GM Skipped Turbocharging And Hybrids – And What That Means For Reliability

Both new V8s carry over quite a lot of DNA from yesteryear. For one thing, they’re both naturally aspirated, use pushrod-activated valvetrains, are fueled by direct injection, and sport an age-old 90-degree cylinder bank angle. A 10-speed automatic transmission comes standard across both engines, too.

Don’t be quick to call the new engines re-skins yet, though, because there’s some new stuff to be found within them, too. For starters, both use dual fuel injection, meaning both direct and port injection are found within. Compression ratios were turned up, too, with both boasting a 12.5:1 ratio thanks to revised cylinder heads. A new variable oiling system is present, as well.

GMC’s new mantra going into 2027 seems to be: skip hybrids entirely. According to General Motors, the company is only responsible for about 0.1% of the entireUnited States Domestic Market (USDM) hybrid share, as its sole hybrid offering is the now-discontinued Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. Should a prospective 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 buyer be interested in fuel efficiency, the model does offer the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel mill, with an estimated combined fuel economy rating of 27 MPG for RWD models.

But these mechanically simple engines are paired with a cabin that couldn’t be more different – and that contrast may be exactly what gives some buyers pause.

The Sierra’s New Motorized Screen Adds Complexity Into The Mix

Contrasting the L76 and L78’s relative mechanical simplicity is GMC’s focus on screens – and more screens. Sitting center stage in the Sierra 1500’s dashboard is a 16.3-inch touch-activated infotainment screen, available on every single grade, including the entry-level Pro. Alongside its large size is its ability to lift away from the dashboard, revealing a hidden cubbyhole behind it.

There’s more, too. A 12.2-inch screen sits in front of the driver, and an optional 11.5-inch screen can be thrown onto the passenger’s side of the dashboard. The 40 inches of screen are complemented by GMC’s optional MultiPro center console, which can be folded, laid flat, and used as storage or a workstation. All of that is notable, but GMC scored below average in JD Power’s 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), scoring 228 Problems Per 100 Vehicles (PP100). Most complaints centered around infotainment and electronics issues.

That’s not to say the 2027 Sierra 1500’s tech-laden interior is doomed to be a letdown, but other brands have also had issues with tech as of late. For example, even reliability-obsessed Toyota has recently issued recalls for infotainment screen and camera issues in the Tundra pickups, with roughly 162,000 units affected.

The Trim-Level Catch: Why Serious Towers Can’t Have The Denali Ultimate

    2027 GMC Sierra 1500GMC

For those of us who still value large-displacement, simple V8 engines in pickup trucks, GM is poised to nearly corner the market in that respect. Having a pushrod V8 under the hood of your workhorse may instill some confidence, as a lack of turbocharging or excessively complicated electronics can remove some dependability concerns from the equation. At the same time, the L76 and L78 towing capacity discrepancy tells us that maximum horsepower doesn’t always equal maximum capability.

Interestingly, if you plan to tow more than 9,400 lbs regularly with a Sierra 1500, you will need to opt for the smaller L76 5.7-liter V8. That also means trims like the AT4X and Denali Ultimate are automatically unavailable, as both exclusively offer the 6.6-liter L78 engine. Although, you can still take advantage of the Pro, Elevation, AT4, and standard Denali grades.

At the same time, this straightforward pair of V8s is fitted into trucks that feature a considerable amount of technology throughout their cabins. More screens can mean more convenience, but electronics have proven to be one of the more unreliable aspects of modern vehicles, as JD Power has indicated in its VDS study. At this point, the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500’s technology-forward feature set cannot be dismissed as unreliable, but history may give some buyers pause regardless.

Now, GMC looks to prove to the market that it can balance its old-school engine advantage with its use of new-school technology in a way that proves reliable and doesn’t overly complicate the ownership experience.
