Ford’s $30,000 EV pickup makes this full-size SUV look massive

Ford’s midsize electric pickup was caught driving next to an Expedition, offering a better idea of its true size compared to the three-row SUV.

The midsize Ford EV pickup is launching in 2027

With the all-electric F-150 Lightning dead and gone, Ford is preparing to introduce its next EV pickup.

As the first vehicle based on its new Universal EV Platform (UEV), Ford’s upcoming model is smaller, more efficient, and considerably cheaper, with prices starting at around $30,000.

We got our first look at the midsize four-door pickup lastmonth as Ford began testing it in public.

The disguised prototype, spotted in Long Beach by The Autopian, appeared even smaller than expected, driving in between a Ford Ranger-based Mazda B-Series and an F-150 pickup. It also sat much closer to the ground, with a design similar to Ford’s iconic Ranchero.

With the new EV pickup set to launch in 2027, Ford is ramping up testing. Another camouflaged prototype was recently captured testing alongside the full size Expedition SUV, offering a good look at just how small Ford’s “midsize” pickup will be.

The new images from SB-Medien (via TheDrive) show the disguised pickup from several different angles. One thing is certain: this is nothing like the F-150 Lightning. If anything, it looks more like the Maverick.

Although it looks tiny, The Autopian pointed out that the “second row looks fairly large” in person. Ford claims it will offer more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4.

The camouflage is covered in what appears to be emojis, or just random objects like a soccer ball and heart.

Although it’s still covered, you can see a large camera in the center of the front grille. A new spoiler was also spotted on the rear cabin roof.

Compared to the Expedition it’s driving next to, Ford’s “midsize” pickup looks tiny. It also rides much closer to the ground than the full-size SUV.

A close-up of the interior revealed a large touchscreen infotainment screen, confirming what was briefly shown on Ford’s “secret” website for the midsize pickup.

The midsize pickup is set to launch in 2027 as the first vehicle based on Ford’s UEV platform, which the company promises will deliver improvements across the board.

Ford is taking a radically different approach to cut costs and improve efficiency, including new manufacturing practices like megacasting and the use of prismatic LFP batteries.

Ford’s Advanced EV Aerodynamics senior manager, Saleem Merkt, said earlier this year that the new pickup’s aerodynamic efficiency is “more than 15% better than any other pickup truck on the market today and will ultimately result in longer range and lower cost for our customers.”

It will also be Ford’s first EV with a native NACS charge port. The midsize pickup will be built at Ford’s Louisville Assembly plant. It will go on sale in 2027, starting at around $30,000.

After the prototype was spotted in Long Beach, a reader noticed a hidden QR code in the camouflage that takes you to a secret website. The website (check it out here) has a few videos posted that offer a sneak peek at the new model and more.
