The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture.

Ford discontinued the Escape and its more-expensive Lincoln sibling, the Corsair, last year to free up space at its Louisville plant. This was done to make room for the new $30,000 Fathom electric pickup truck. We’re still months away from seeing the fruits of Ford’s new electric platform, though in the meantime, Ford dealers are seeing fewer customers walk through the doors—a lot of whom would have driven away in one of the company’s compact crossovers.

Just how many? Well, by this time last year, Ford had sold 114,000 Escapes and 19,000 Corsairs. This year, the final production vehicles still trickling through Ford’s dealer network have accounted for about 37,000 units combined—most of them in Q1 and Q2, when those leftovers were still more plentiful. That’s a deficit of nearly 100,000 units just so far this year, and the clock is still counting down to the unveiling of Ford’s new EV.

By the time the new platform comes online, the Escape and Corsair will likely have been out of the pipeline for at least a year—a period during which Ford should be able to tally about 160,000 combined sales of the Escape and Corsair. And from a look at Ford’s Q3 sales chart, those customers are just gone.

And as much as we hate to say “we told you so,” well, we said this might happen—and we weren’t alone.

The most logical place to find these wayward shoppers would be in a Bronco Sport. After all, it’s merely a clone of the Escape with some off-road aspirations. But Bronco Sport sales have been stagnant so far in 2026. There was a decent uptick in Q3, but so far the model range is only up 2.9% (about 3,000 units) for the year. Perhaps some of them purchased Explorers; those are up nearly 18% so far in 2026, but even if every single one of those customers was converted from Escape, that would only account for 29,000 more sales—a far cry from the number that have gone missing. There was an equal groundswell at Mustang, but again, not enough to cover the spread.

Wherever these buyers are, they’re certainly not in new F-150s. The F-Series as a whole was down slightly in Q3. Ford hoped to see a big bounce-back with one of its primary aluminum suppliers resuming production after a fire last October took it offline for months. Ford was unable to source affordable replacement stock in the interim due to the administration’s ongoing trade war, which in turn limited Ford’s production capacity. That the issue has since been resolved may explain why the F-Series was only down about 2% this quarter, rather than 11%, as it was in Q2, but Ford’s lofty 2026 production targets long ago went up in smoke.

We knew Ford was betting big on its next-gen EV rollout. Now we have a better idea of exactly how big. And to further compound the problem, Ford axed the Escape right before hybrids really got hot, leaving the Maverick as the company’s only truly affordable, efficient hybrid. Talk about bad timing, eh?
