The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded the probe into a recall covering 1,392,935 Ford F-150 pickups from the 2015 through 2017 model years equipped with the 6R80 automatic transmission. The core issue remains the same one that first raised alarms: a signal loss tied to the transmission system that can trigger an unexpected multi-gear downshift, with the potential to momentarily lock the rear wheels and increase the risk of a crash.

The automaker has also acknowledged two injuries and one accident that may be related.
The remedy, at least for now, appears relatively straightforward compared to the scale of the recall. Ford says owners will begin receiving notifications in late April, while the official fix is expected to be ready in July. Dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module calibration, and in certain cases the lead frame will also be replaced. That software-first approach suggests Ford believes improved control logic can better identify or manage the faulty signal before it leads to a dangerous downshift event, though some trucks may still need hardware attention depending on the circumstances.
This recall is also a reminder of how issues that begin as scattered owner complaints can eventually build into a much larger safety story.
