Ferrari can’t win, and we’re not talking about Formula 1. The Italian sports car brand has drawn the ire of seemingly everybody, whether it’s criticism over the Apple EV, sorry, Luce EV, or being slammed for the synthetic manual transmission in the 12Cilindri when everyone else is building authentic ones. But that isn’t stopping Ferrari from innovating, and CarBuzz data suggests Ferrari has filed 114 patents and trademarks so far in 2026, nearly 50% more than last year.
Its latest is particularly interesting, as the imagery shows a hypercar that looks like it comes from 60 years in the future. But what it’s showcasing could arrive on your Ferrari within the next few years.

The Hypercar Of The Future, And What It Means For The Car Of Today

CarBuzz uncovered the patent filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and while the title “Sport Road Vehicle With Variable Rear Aerodynamic Load” sounded interesting, it was the accompanying imagery that dropped our jaws. Ferrari’s choice of patent diagrams looks like an F80 dialed up to 20, particularly with the immense rear diffuser that reaches tight up to the upper wing elements. And then there’s the cockpit, or rather lack thereof, with a low-slung roof and seemingly no doors, windows, or any compartment that could contain a driver.
It’s a vision of the future, and arguably one that’s even wilder than the company’s 2022 Vision Gran Turismo concept, although there are some similarities. Despite what we can only describe as mid-engined proportions, with a cab-forward stance, there appears to be no engine behind where a cockpit would be. Instead, that area is left open to create what Ferrari refers to in the patent as “an axial aerodynamic channel that develops behind the cockpit.”

So is this the next Ferrari hypercar? The great, great-grandchild of the Ferrari F80? Probably not. But there’s something else here that could make it to production way sooner.
Active Aero Taillights That Make Ferraris Faster
The real purpose behind the patent isn’t to hide a futuristic hypercar in somewhat plain sight, but to showcase an idea for a new active aerodynamic system that uses a piece of bodywork already present on every single Ferrari: the taillights.

Ferrari envisions the rear light bar being mounted in a movable fashion, where, in a default position, it is located below the primary rear wing. However, when the car needs to balance aerodynamic load at the rear of the car, the lighting element can be moved out of the way to a position behind the rear wing. This acts in a two-fold fashion, first opening the rear of the car for better airflow, and second, by marginally extending the length of the rear wing. A lower spoiler element on the lower bodywork kicks airflow upward, and because of the additional length, the airflow would be able to attach to the uppermost wing more effectively.
Even airflow from the underfloor diffuser could find itself attaching to the upper wing, creating a monumentally effective rear end that maximizes ground effect rather than encountering flow separation partway up the diffuser. It’s a pretty extreme interpretation of the concept, especially as shown in Figure 5 below, which showcases the aero profile of a hypercar from front to rear both in terms of flow over the cockpit and around the side of it.

However, Ferrari’s also got a simpler variation that might be more plug-and-play into cars it builds today.
A Second, More Realistic Design Likely To Be Implemented Sooner
Figures 1, 2, and 3 in the patent are far less hypercar-related, largely because the first image shows a Purosangue, the brand’s SUV (or FUV, if you buy the marketing hype). The latter two show a simpler embodiment of the movable lighting aero devoid of all the crazy wings, spoilers, and underfloor diffusers. In this embodiment, the taillight’s position below the aero passageway under a wind could see it slide up and angle down, changing the airflow profile under the wing and creating a spoiler.

Ferrari explicitly notes that “the final shape of the light assembly, the movement to be carried out to move between the first and the second position and the related actuator may be different, according to requirements and to the type of vehicle,” so this simpler version could be tweaked for other models in Ferrari’s lineup.
CarBuzz Insight — Why It Matters
Ferrari, for all its strange decisions, is an innovative company. Lest we forget, the ‘flappy paddle’ gearbox and carbon ceramic brakes were inventions first put into road cars by Ferrari, and the ‘Manuale by Wire’ system in the 12Cilindri Manuale, whether you like it or not, is innovation that will likely filter into mainstream cars a decade from now.
With this latest aerodynamic patent, Ferrari is finding ways to use existing bodywork for multiple applications, which is something we can’t fundamentally fault. Ferrari once refused to put wings on its cars because they ruined the beauty of the curves, and maybe by using existing design elements for aerodynamic enhancement, we can get back to truly beautiful Ferrari’s once more.
