Dodge, Chrysler, And Company Going All In On One Platform To Rule Them All

Stellantis has just announced yet another wide-ranging product plan. This one will see five different platforms combined into one, which will let it support more than 30 different models and two million sales, eclipsing Ford’s new Universal Vehicle idea in a major way. It’s called STLA One, and it will need to work. Because the automaker wants to have a crazy number of sales on the platform in less than four years.

The new platform is called STLA One. The automaker revealed the new modular architecture today as part of its 2026 investor day, and it comes with wild ambitions and big stakes. “STLA One is a clear example of a truly modular strategy, giving us the flexibility of a multi-energy platform without carrying inefficiencies from one propulsion system to another,” said Ned Curic, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer.

This new platform will cover the B, C, and D segments, Stellantis said. That’s a broad range of vehicle segments, stretching down to subcompacts like the Citroen C3, medium-sized by Euro standards but compact by US standards vehicles like the Opel Astra, and slightly larger but still small models like the Peugeot 507.

Yes, those are all European nameplates, not sold in the US. That’s because the Stellantis product line has shrunk so far in the US that it doesn’t sell anything below “barge” with the exception of a handful of Fiat electrics and Alfa Romeos. But that doesn’t mean it won’t reach US shores. In fact, it could arrive here in a major way.

Stellantis Makes A Big Decision About Its American Future

Stellantis wants to work on its existing brands in America, not make their slices of the automotive pie any smaller.

Stellantis plans to build over 30 models on the bones. Sharing one platform across that many vehicles can cut costs and increase scale. Stellantis said it plans to put 50% of its global sales on just three platforms, with the other two yet to be announced. Those models will share up to 70% of their parts, boosting cost-cutting, getting vehicles to market more quickly, and helping suppliers with stability.

No, This Is Not A Repeat

This plan might sound very familiar, because Stellantis announced a similar one in 2021. At the time, it said that four platforms, Small, Medium, Large, and Frame, would consolidate its lineup. That consolidation never really happened as the company’s electric plans stalled, but it’s likely many of the same ideas will carry through here. It also sounds like Ford’s $30,000 EV promise of the Universal Electric Vehicle program and Universal Production System, but with the ambitions turned up well beyond 11.

The new platform will be capable of handling both gas and electric power from the go. This will include 800-volt electrical systems for greater efficiency and faster charging, and cell-to-body integration for lower costs and weight.

It will also be the first to integrate the company’s previously-announced STLA Brain and SmartCockpit technology packages. The Brain is a cloud-integrated system that has access to every sensor and actuator in the vehicle, and it cuts the number of necessary control units in half. SmartCockpit is a new user experience system with wider customization and more vehicle integration. Both were first announced with the Chrysler Airflow concept in 2022.

Stellantis said the first model on the new platform would arrive in 2027, but did not give any hints about what it would be. The automaker did say that it planned to build a 15,000 euro ($17,000) electric vehicle for Europe starting in 2028.

Stellantis Just Decided The Future Of Its 14 Car Brands

Brands like Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, and Maserati have been on shaky ground, but their future is safe… for now.

The announcement came along with Stellantis sharing its reorganized brand structure. Four “global brands” will get nearly all of its future investment, but it seems that none of the current 14 will be cut.

Can one platform save the company? History, and specifically, Chrysler history, suggests that it can.
