Experienced by Kimatni D. Rawlins
Recently in England I jumped behind the wheel of the empowering 2026 Defender OCTA, Land Rover’s most extreme Defender yet. The goal was to highlight the adventurous SUV’s incredible off-road capabilities on the 5,200-acre Eastnor Castle Estate, where media and consumers can partake in an array of Defender Experiences. The proving grounds were extreme and quite challenging, but the OCTA was jolly good!
If you were wondering, the Defender OCTA name embodies real meaning behind it, drawing inspiration from the toughest and most desirable mineral on the planet, the diamond, and specifically its octahedral shape. It’s the very geometry responsible for the SUV’s strength and unmistakable presence. That same shape shows up in the new signature graphic, marking OCTA as the flagship of the Defender lineup. Strong, resilient, and every bit as rare and desirable as the stone that inspired it.
Set within the grounds of the Eastnor Estate, sixty miles of carefully managed off-road trails twist through the property where Land Rover has tested the capability and technology of every vehicle it builds for over sixty years now. Specially trained instructors offer personal, dedicated guidance, allowing guests such as myself to explore the heritage of adventure and feel firsthand what unstoppable all-terrain capability feels like. It’s a challenge built on adrenaline, precision, and the pursuit of the impossible.
Master of Extreme Performance
When Land Rover invited us to the prestigious activity, I knew upon arrival what to expect from the mighty Defender OCTA. Under the hood rests a 4.4-liter twin-turbo mild-hybrid V8 producing 626 horsepower and up to 553 lb-ft of torque. Switch into Dynamic Launch Mode and torque jumps to 590. That’s enough for an explosive run of 0 to 60 in just 3.8 seconds. It is the most powerful engine offered in a Defender.
OCTA’s wheel arches have been widened by 2.7 inches to accommodate 33” tires; in this case, my vehicle was outfitted with 275/60 R20 BFGoodrich Trail Terrain T/A rubber to traverse through muddy water, over rocks, and up and down steep hills with the help of Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, a 6D Dynamics suspension, and OCTA Mode. OCTA’s rear bumper is unique and quad exhausts have been reprofiled to enhance departure angles; the grille is larger and deeper to maximize airflow and feed the larger brake ducts for the bigger front brake discs, and underneath there’s a revised aluminum alloy front underbody shield. As well, the new 20” rims are fully forged.
The Eastnor Experience Center rests within 5,200 acres of stunning Herefordshire countryside and woodland on the private grounds of Eastnor Castle. For decades, this has been one of the proving grounds for Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery, where demanding terrain has shaped and confirmed the character of every vehicle that carries the respected name. Spend a full day immersed in uncompromising adventure, with Defender exactly where it belongs. Rocky ascents, deep ruts, and water wading became the classroom as my coach instructed me on advanced driving techniques. The OCTA can swim in 39.3 inches of liquid, thanks to a suspension that is raised by 2.95 inches. Trust me, Eastnor is the definitive route to experience Defender’s durability along with its modern capability.
Defender Lifestyle Capabilities
From a product planning perspective, the new OCTA has been put through 600,000 miles of real-world punishment, from the dunes of the UAE to the Nürburgring in Germany to snow and ice in Sweden. But this SUV’s abilities are not just for extreme activities. On a previous test drive with the rugged and resilient Defender 110 X-Dynamic around my hometown in Maryland, it enjoyed ventures to the trailhead for mountain biking. Swinging open the heavy tailgate, laying down the seats, and unloading my Specialized Stumpjumper MTB all came with ease. The rugged interior, layered with a sturdy floorboard cover, handled the muddy return without complaint. To navigate forest-like surroundings, the Defender’s solution is the 3D Surround Camera. And now the new Defender 110 offers a 6‑seat configuration for increased comfort and access, featuring a set of second-row Captain Chairs. Brilliant!
New OCTA Highlights
Defender OCTA carries a wider stance that speaks with confidence before you set foot inside, blending on-road composure with off-road ferocity in equal measure. In addition to the T/As, dedicated Michelin Primacy all-season rubber for the daily grind or purpose-built off-road Wrangler DuraTrac tread for when the pavement runs out are available. For those wanting to push the visual envelope further, an optional Chopped Carbon Fiber treatment adds texture and attitude to both the interior and exterior.
Color options continue to expand the OCTA story, with the arrival of Woolstone Green joining Sargasso Blue, Borasco Grey, Patagonia White Matte Wrap, Charente Grey, Petra Copper, and Narvik Black. Each hue carries its own mood, but all wear the OCTA badge with equal enthusiasm. Standard across both Defender OCTA and the OCTA Black is a Gloss Black Tail Door Spoiler.
OCTA Superpowers: Drive Modes, ClearSight Ground View, Etc.
When the terrain turns extreme, All-Terrain Progress Control and ClearSight Ground View step in as your co-pilots. Together, they take the stress out of holding a low crawl speed. At the same time, the touchscreen reveals exactly what’s hidden directly in front of the vehicle during extreme conditions such as navigating around or over a boulder.
Defender also offers Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control, an evolution of All-Terrain Progress Control that lets the driver dial in a preferred comfort level before tackling rough ground. That means less time managing throttle and more time focused purely on steering. The result is a noticeably more composed off-road experience with far less driver fatigue. As the surface ripples beneath you, the system quietly adjusts speed on its own, keeping the ride smooth and unbothered no matter how unpredictable the terrain gets. I didn’t feel comfortable at first as I prefer to control the throttle. Still, I quickly learned to let go because the environment was deeply demanding, especially when slowly creeping through tunnel-like trails with banks as high as the hood and no room to open the doors if I had stopped.
OCTA gives you three core drive modes: Comfort, Dynamic, and OCTA Mode. Dynamic Mode is built for the street for ultimate on-road performance. OCTA Mode is where things get serious. It maximizes wheel travel, enables Off-Road Launch Mode, and switches on Off-Road ABS for greater braking performance. During this particular demonstration, I felt like I was going to break some suspension components, but the Defender OPTA handled the assignment with confidence. Stopping power comes from Brembo 6-piston aluminum calipers, paired with the all-new suspension hardware. Beyond that, Terrain Response has settings to adapt to Sand, Mud and Ruts, Grass Gravel Snow, and Rock Crawl; basically, whatever the surface throws at you.
Visit Eastnor Castle on Holiday
Beneath the southern curve of the Malvern Hills, within a National Landscape recognized for its ecological worth, the Eastnor Estate quietly runs like a breathing network of over one hundred structures, each connected to the land around it. This is a place where farmland, woodland, and parkland operate in steady balance, a system tuned over generations rather than built overnight. Parts of this terrain hold Site of Scientific Special Interest status by Natural England, protected for the rare ecosystems they sustain. Portions of the estate sit within a Geopark, recognized for the estate’s geological significance long before any road or rooftop arrived.
Complete the Journey
Land Rovers, including the Defender brand (OCTA, 90, 110, and 130), stand out as some of the most compelling SUVs traversing the globe from the United States to Great Britain. Their physiques are not just visually attractive but also evoke emotional effects. Hopefully, quality issues will be minimized this go-around. Yet, with its legendary off-road capabilities, the Defender is not just a utility vehicle; it’s a statement.
