China Is Gunning For Porsche Nurburgring Records With A Teal Blue Hatchback

Remember when hot hatchbacks used to be cheap underpowered fun? An early Mk2 GTI 16V was a joy to wring out and three-wheel around corners, giving the driver every bit of its 127-horsepower Volkswagen four-pot at max-attack. And there was still room for a small drum kit in the boot, at least with the seats folded down.

The hatchback in these photos definitely qualifies as hot. In fact, if the CarBuzz spies are accurate, it has more horsepower than a Hennessey Venom F5. Based on the aero we see, it should have gobs of downforce.

This is the Denza Z9 GT from China, but in a form you’ve never seen before. And it’s hunting for Nurburgring glory.

Caught recently by spy photographers at the 12.9-mile Nordschleife loop, this electric rocketship is reportedly packing no less than 2,000 horsepower under its terrifically teal exterior. By comparison, a standard Z9 GT only has around 1,150 hp, which is barely enough to haul a case of eggs beneath its hatch.

This one could probably haul eggs, but its primary purpose is to haul something else. Something that rhymes with grass, but without the GR influence, if you catch our meaning. No, we aren’t talking about something with Toyota GR branding.

This round of spy photos is rather refreshing. Denza is attacking the track in a prototype without any camouflage whatsoever. It gives a crystal clear look at what our sources are calling the Z9 GT Xtreme. Whether that name ultimately comes to fruition is unknown, but it certainly seems worthy of the title.

This car has an aero package that wouldn’t look out-of-place on a Mansory Lamborghini. The ginormous swan neck wing at the back gets all the attention, and presumably, all the downforce. There’s a big fat rear diffuser back there, too.

Big fender flares at the back help the bladed rocker trim blend in, if anything can blend in on this car, that is. The body kit looks like it’s designed to channel air along the sides. It roughly follows the exterior trim of a standard Z9, though it’s far more exaggerated here. And presumably more functional, too.

At the front, we’re actually surprised to not see as much aggression as we’d expect. There’s a rather small front lip that doesn’t look terribly functional, flanked by big winglets at the corners. The whole front fascia is different though, with much larger intakes gulping air.

Denza Z9GT Extreme Spy PhotoCarBuzz / Valnet

A good chunk of that air no doubt goes to cooling the brakes, which are huge. And since the Denza Z9 is an EV, generating 2,000 hp also generates all kinds of heat.

What kind of performance can we expect? Actually, Denza’s choice of colors on this car might give us a clue. The teal with orange isn’t so far off from Porsche’s iconic Gulf livery. If you wanted to send a message to an automotive rival about your intentions, showing up on their turf wearing their colors is pretty clear: We’re coming for you, or in this case, your records.

Denza Z9GT Extreme Spy PhotoCarBuzz / Valnet

That’s why we think Denza is record-hunting with this car. Porsche currently holds the ‘Ring record for the fastest production EV, set by a Taycan Turbo GT with a Manthey kit earlier in 2026. That time to beat is 6 minutes, 55.53 seconds. If this car indeed packs 2,000 hp and as much downforce as the aero package suggests, Denza could easily take the EV crown.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Many people argue that Nurburgring Lap times are meaningless. The track is too long to really get a good sense of a car’s capability; it’s more about the driver’s capability to go through nearly 13 miles of corners without one tiny misstep. And those people could have a point.

But a ‘Ring record isn’t about having the fastest car. It’s about the bragging rights and the halo effect that comes with it. Sending a production car around the Nordschleife in under 7 minutes is a notable achievement. Beating Porsche at a track where they hate to lose? The sales and marketing people live for that sort of thing. If you want to show the world you have a properly fast car, turn a lap at Spa or Hockenheim. If you want attention, it’s all about the Nordschleife.

When will Denza go for an official record? Don’t be surprised to hear something by the end of the year.
