Bentley has officially reached another major milestone in the transformation of its Crewe headquarters with the launch of a new state-of-the-art Paint Shop, a facility that promises to expand customization possibilities while advancing the company’s manufacturing capabilities well into the future. The opening of the 12,500-square-meter facility is being celebrated with the debut of an eye-catching new paint technology called Spectraflair, showcased on a one-of-a-kind Bentley Continental GT S finished in an exclusive color known as Spectral Verdant.
The new Paint Shop immediately takes over finishing duties for Bentley’s Continental GT, Continental GTC, Flying Spur, and the brand’s first fully electric vehicle, which is scheduled to debut later this year. The Bentayga will eventually join operations there as well. Designed as a cornerstone of Bentley’s long-term “Dream Factory” strategy, the facility significantly expands customer choice by supporting nearly 100 individual exterior paint colors while providing the flexibility to introduce even more bespoke finishes in the future. For a brand where personalization is often as important as performance, the investment represents a major step forward.
Inside, the facility combines advanced automation with the hand-crafted attention to detail Bentley customers expect. Operations are spread across two levels, with sophisticated energy management systems helping create ideal working conditions while dramatically improving efficiency. The company says the building requires no heating for roughly two-thirds of the year thanks to innovative thermal recovery systems that capture and redistribute heat generated during the paint process. Bentley has also introduced water-based paint primers and more precise paint application methods, helping reduce waste materials by up to 45 percent compared to the previous facility.
Environmental improvements extend beyond efficiency gains. A new Residual Thermal Oxidiser system purifies paint-process emissions by burning fumes at extremely high temperatures before air is released back into the environment. Bentley estimates the technology will reduce volatile organic compound emissions from its paint operations by as much as 98 percent. Meanwhile, the facility becomes the first automotive paint shop in the world to utilize Automated Guided Vehicles, or AGVs, to transport vehicle bodies between workstations. The self-propelled carriers provide greater flexibility for highly customized builds while improving manufacturing precision and workplace ergonomics.
The true star of the launch, however, is the new Spectraflair paint finish. Developed by Bentley’s artisans in Crewe, Spectral Verdant builds upon the brand’s existing Verdant color by incorporating an intricate spectrum effect that reveals multiple colors beneath the surface as natural light hits the bodywork from different angles. The result is a remarkably dynamic finish that changes character throughout the day, showcasing the kind of craftsmanship and innovation that has become synonymous with Bentley’s Mulliner personalization division.
To further demonstrate the capabilities of the new facility, Bentley created a one-off Continental GT S featuring a hand-sprayed Union Flag racing stripe finished in Ghost White Pearlescent. The intricate design required several days of careful work and serves as a showcase for the level of artistry now possible within the new Paint Shop. As Bentley continues its transition toward an electrified future, including its first battery-electric vehicle, the new facility ensures the brand’s reputation for world-class craftsmanship and customization remains every bit as important as the technology powering the vehicles themselves.
