In the 2000s, TiVo reached heights few companies ever achieve. Like Google and Xerox, its name became a verb. People had to “TiVo” the new episode of Battlestar Galactica or game 4 of the Red Sox vs. Cardinals, not “record” it. While it didn’t invent the DVR, TiVo popularized it and many of the features we would eventually take for granted, like the ability to pause or rewind live TV, and watch one program while recording another. Those features were covered in the now infamous US Patent 6,233,389 — better known as the Time Warp patent. TiVo spent a good chunk…
The biggest car news and reviews, no BS Our free daily newsletter sends the stories that really matter directly to you, every weekday. A bunch of Jeep Wrangler 4xe owners started their week off with a rather cruel surprise when what seemed like a routine, over-the-air software update ended up rendering a vast swath of those vehicles essentially inoperable. According to a tipster who contacted us directly, the update scrambled her 4xe’s digital brain so badly that she was unable to coax the car out of her immediate neighborhood without losing drive power: “Over the weekend Jeep pushed an over…
Look, we know there are plenty of people out there who don’t like the Mazda MX-5 Miata. It’s a crazy opinion to us, because the Miata has consistently been one of the best sports cars on sale since its debut, but everyone is entitled to have a wrong opinion from time to time. So if you’re in the market for an affordable sports car, what do you do? There aren’t many new options out there, but this is why you turn to the used market, where you can get a lot of car for much less than the price of…
Germany is set to bring back electric car subsidies from January 2026 by launching a €4 billion (£3.4bn) programme that targets buyers of more affordable models. The new incentive scheme, agreed by Germany’s coalition government after meetings with automotive industry officials in Berlin last week, will offer up to €4000 (£3400) towards electric cars with a net list price under €45,000 (£38,250). In a clear push towards fully electric cars, plug-in hybrids have been excluded from the programme, with eligibility requiring WLTP certified emissions of less than 50g/km of CO2. The move follows the UK government’s recent launch of a…

WhatsApp is taking a new anti-spam feature for a spin. On Friday, TechCrunch reported that the trial limits the number of messages accounts can send without a reply from the recipient. The company is currently experimenting with different limits. But it’s aiming for a number that only targets high-volume senders and spammers. All messages from individuals and businesses are said to count toward this cap. That includes multiple unread ones sent to the same recipient. But if the person replies, those messages are removed from the monthly tally. WhatsApp will show a warning to accounts nearing the limit. The company told TechCrunch…

If we’re to believe recent news, internal combustion engines aren’t going anywhere. Despite all the doom and gloom, consumers still prefer gasoline-powered cars, and enthusiasts will soon have a new one to potentially add to their next project. It comes from Runge Cars, and it’s not for your everyday project car—it’s an air-cooled 5.3-liter flat-eight. It’s called the Hetzer, and it’s a four-cam, 32-valve engine that will power Runge’s new R3, a chassis and body design from the Minnesota outfit. The R3, which the company says is “purpose-built to deliver the most visceral, analog driving experience available today,” pairs the…
Gaining traction among car and fashion lovers, even in the winter, Porsche and Aimé Leon Dore are back with cold weather styles. Porsche knows a thing or two about performance in the cold. Whether it’s a 911 drifting through an alpine pass or idling on a snow-covered city street, the Porsche’s legacy has always embraced the elements rather than avoiding them. Aimé Leon Dore seems to follow that same rhythm. The New York label’s latest collaboration with Porsche channels that winter-ready energy into apparel, reimagining archived pieces through the lens of ’90s design. The Fall/Winter 2025 collection filters familiar Porsche…
Squire’s Castle. Henryk Sadura / Shutterstock You can’t miss this one if you’re exploring North Chagrin Reservation in Willoughby Hills. Built as a gatehouse in the 1890s, Squire’s Castle was part of a larger estate that never materialized. Today, it’s a free and picturesque spot for picnics, photos, and short hikes through the park. There’s no cost to enter, and the parking lot is just steps away. We created this article in conjunction with AI technology, then made sure it was fact-checked and edited by a HowStuffWorks editor.
