The manual transmission is having a bittersweet year. On the positive side, there has been a huge resurgence in manual demand at the exotic and sports car level, with Porsche bringing it back on the Carrera S, and Nissan doing the same with the Z Nismo, for example. But we’ve also had many casualties in the past 12 months, from the loss of the 718 Cayman/Boxster, Supra, Z4, and CT4-V Blackwing, to affordable cars like the Civic Si, and the manual transmission for the Integra and Jetta GLI. Hopefully some of these return someday, but in the meantime, here’s the…
The White House claims the Donald Trump-owned Truth Social is the “most powerful and popular social media platform in the world.” The statement, provided to The New York Times by White House spokesperson Davis Ingle, is at odds with the user counts from some of the biggest social media platforms on the web.Data gathered by Search Engine Land shows YouTube is the most popular platform in the world, with 2.65 billion monthly active users. Facebook comes in second with 2.39 billion active users around the globe, followed by TikTok with 2.21 billion and Instagram with 1.99 billion. Truth Social doesn’t…

More AI, better cameras and few reasons to switch ecosystems. Apple / Google / Will Shanklin for Engadget The iPhone 18 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro are the latest examples of a familiar story: Apple and Google refining, rather than reinventing, mature flagship smartphones. Both are expensive, powerful phones with top-notch screens, three rear cameras and (like it or not) an ever-growing list of AI features. They both come in two sizes and have similar price tags. There are still plenty of subtle differences. But neither phone likely gives you a compelling reason to switch ecosystems.…
You might think a used-but-recent electric luxury SUV is always bound to come with a sizable price tag. In one particular case, however, the opposite is true. We’re talking about the Fisker Ocean, the short-lived electric SUV produced by failed automaker Fisker Inc. The model is now floating around the used market with unsupported tech on board, rapidly sliding towards obsolescence. While the top-of-the-line Extreme trim came with a price tag of $69,000 just three years ago, today examples of the Ocean can be found for a quarter of that figure. Here is a closer look at the Ocean, its…
Diesel-electric locomotives have been barreling along America’s wide-open spaces for generations, and the century-old combination of consistent, high-efficiency diesel engines spinning up generators to power high-torque electric motors has proven tough to beat. Now, Caterpillar is putting that century-old concept to work in an even bigger dozer – and the promised efficiency gains are incredible. Before we get lost in the specs of Caterpillar‘s new D11 XE Electric Drive hybrid, I want to make sure that you, dear reader, understand that large-scale construction are often penciled and bid on razor-thin margins, and a swing in job site efficiency of just 1-2%…
When the time comes for increased responsibility, whether that’s due to the interests of a growing family or needing to be more sensible from a financial standpoint in general, it can be tough for gearheads to sacrifice a fast car. Most sensible stuff, such as something with a Toyota badge, be it a RAV4 SUV, or maybe a Corolla if you’re looking for an affordable and nippy runaround, lacks that bit of verve such a driver would be looking for. Well, thankfully, buying something that’s interesting to throw about and also cheap to run is much more attainable than you…

The Drive 🤝 your inbox. Every weekday The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture. Electric cars have ruined a lot of things for enthusiasts. Personally, it’s hard to be impressed or feel excited by any gas-powered sports car’s acceleration after spending the two or three years after the pandemic driving mostly EVs. Their effortless propulsion has a way of numbing your senses to the point that once you get used to it, you’d need something like a top-fuel dragster or space rocket to make you giggle. Or so…
You only get one chance at a first impression, and getting to introduce Apple’s first folding phone is certainly a strong way to start things off as Apple’s CEO.
