Acura Could Finally Get a Larger Three-Row Flagship SUV to Challenge the Lexus TX : Automotive Addicts

    Acura

Acura may finally be preparing the larger three-row luxury SUV that many dealers and shoppers have wanted for years. According to recent reporting out of Automotive News, Honda is planning a new Acura flagship utility vehicle positioned above the MDX, with production expected to begin in September 2029 at Honda’s plant in Lincoln, Alabama. Internally referred to as the “Acura XL” in a Honda document, the model is reportedly being developed to give Acura a true family-size luxury entry that can better compete with vehicles like the Lexus TX.

The move would make a lot of sense for Acura’s North American lineup. The MDX has long served as the brand’s three-row anchor, but it sits in the midsize space and does not offer the same kind of third-row comfort and cargo flexibility that larger luxury SUV buyers often want. The Lexus TX proved there is demand for a more spacious, comfort-focused three-row luxury crossover that does not carry the price or size penalty of European flagships like the Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7, or the upcoming Audi Q9.

The reported Acura XL is expected to use a new large-vehicle hybrid powertrain, which could give Acura the blend of premium performance and efficiency it needs to stand apart. That would also fit Honda’s broader shift back toward hybrids after pulling back from some planned EV programs. A strong hybrid system could give this SUV better fuel economy than a traditional gas-only large utility vehicle while still delivering the smooth power and refinement expected from a flagship Acura.

Details on size, platform, and layout remain limited, but dealer chatter suggests there is hope for something more substantial than simply a stretched MDX. Some retailers are reportedly looking for a true large SUV with more cargo room, stronger towing capability, and a more premium presence that can bring shoppers into Acura showrooms instead of sending them to Lexus, Lincoln, Cadillac, or German luxury brands. Whether Acura goes with a unibody crossover layout or something more rugged remains unclear, but the target appears to be a larger and more useful flagship than anything the brand currently offers.

The timing is also important. Acura’s lineup has been narrowing as Honda rethinks its electric vehicle plans, making a new flagship SUV especially valuable. A larger three-row model would give the brand a fresh halo product in the segment where luxury buyers are still spending serious money. Acura has strong name recognition, a loyal customer base, and a reputation for value-minded performance luxury, but it needs more product depth at the top end if it wants to pull buyers away from Lexus and other premium rivals.

If the reported 2029 production timeline holds, the Acura XL would arrive at a time when hybrid luxury SUVs could be even more important than full EVs for many American families. The key will be execution. Acura will need real third-row space, upscale materials, quiet refinement, strong hybrid performance, and pricing that undercuts the most expensive European competition while still feeling genuinely premium. Done right, this could become the flagship Acura has needed for decades and a serious new rival for the Lexus TX.
