Major Land Rover Recall Impacts All Three Of Its Brands

There’s something going on at Land Rover. JLR confirmed to CarBuzz that it issued a stop-sale that affects the Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover models. The issue is related to the airbag systems in the vehicles, but as of right now, there are far more questions than answers surrounding the problem. Here’s what we know so far.

    Possible Airbag Issue Behind Recall

JLR is issuing a recall on the driver’s airbag system in certain Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender models. The Drive initially reported on the recall, and CarBuzz confirmed the news with a JLR spokesperson. However, the exact number of vehicles in the recall is unknown. The automaker is “voluntarily conducting a recall to address a potential issue affecting the driver’s airbag system in certain Range Rover, Discovery and Defender vehicles manufactured between April 2019 and June 2026,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

At this time, there is no additional information regarding the recall. But, since new vehicles are affected, a stop-sale is in place for affected models currently at dealerships. CarBuzz further confirmed that the recall affects just Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender models, not various trim levels within each category.

Because the NHTSA has not yet published details, it’s not clear when JLR will have a solution available for customers or what the repair will involve. JLR had nothing more to say on the matter, aside from stating it had fixed the issue for vehicles currently in production, so new vehicles arriving at dealers are not affected.

Over 120,000 SUVs have suspension parts that could fail with little-to-no warning.

While specific numbers are unknown at this time, CarBuzz estimates the company sold around 250,000 units of the three models in the period affected by the recall. If a majority of these vehicles have problems, this recall could become one of the largest in the company’s history.

The good news for Disco, Defender, and Range Rover owners is that JLR is not aware of any issues of airbag non-deployment so far, which is apparently part of the issue. This recall was a preemptive action on the part of the automaker, after it discovered an issue during internal engineering work. Potential recall problems are often found via manufacturer testing and quality assurance before they become an issue for vehicles on the road.

Customers Will Need To Wait For More Information

A look at the recall database of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows no currently active recall for this issue for any of the vehicles said to be involved. That’s unusual and suggests that the issue has developed very quickly and that Land Rover has acted exceptionally quickly surrounding it.

Land Rover’s own website does show an open recall for vehicles we checked in this block, labeled manufacturer recall D120. However, the site says that details are not yet available, and to reach out to your dealer for more information. At this time, your dealer is unlikely to have anything to add.

Whenever there is an outstanding recall, new car dealers are not allowed to sell affected vehicles. A dealer that does sell a new vehicle with an open recall can be fined up to $22,992 per vehicle or up to $115 million for a series of violations of the law.
