JLR North America CEO Abruptly Quits Amid Company’s ‘Growth’ Strategy

From reimagining Jaguar as an all-electric brand soon relying on only one model, to potentially outsourcing development and production of the next Land Rover Defender to Stellantis, these are trying times for Jaguar Land Rover. The executive ranks have felt the shake-up, too, as PB Balaji replaced JLR veteran Adrian Mardell as global CEO in November. Gerry McGovern departed as chief creative officer three months ago as criticism mounted on the controversial Jaguar Type 01, which was designed under his leadership.

This week, JLR revealed its growth plans – focused more heavily on Land Rover than on Jaguar – and aspirations to make the US arm of the $30 billion British/Indian automaker as big as “the entire JLR business as it exists today.” But those plans will not come to fruition under Joe Eberhardt who was president and CEO of JLR North America since 2013.

Someone Else Will Have To ‘Reimagine’ JLR

Today the automaker confirms that Eberhardt (above, left) “has decided to leave JLR to pursue new opportunities” after a long automotive career that included more than 25 years of sales, marketing, and service posts at Chrysler Group, DaimlerChrysler UK, Mercedes‑Benz USA, and Daimler‑Benz AG. Replacing him as interim North American CEO is Lennard Hoornik (above, right), who became JLR’s chief growth officer in 2021.

A Stellantis-JLR team-up will have the companies collaborating on product development in the US. Can they help each other out of the trough?

Eberhardt’s sudden departure suggests irreconcilable differences with his new boss, Balaji, whose job is to execute the “Reimagine” corporate growth strategy – after the company completely gutted the Jaguar lineup. That strategy for a clean-sheet recast of Jaguar was set well before Balaji became CEO, but he was there for eight years as JLR’s chief financial officer while that strategy came together.

Had Eberhardt and Balaji been clashing over the Jaguar strategy for years, and now Balaji holds all the cards as CEO? Did Eberhardt resign due to product timing, design, or pricing for the upcoming Type 01?

CarBuzz posed these questions today to the JLR communications team, who wished Erberhardt continued success and expressed gratitude for his contributions to the automaker. But as it turns out, he’s not completely severing ties with JLR, based on this statement from the company:

“He will continue to support the company in a consultancy role to the end of 2026, focused on JLR’s collaboration with Stellantis.”

Both JLR and Stellantis announced a month ago that the companies signed a memorandum of understanding to “explore delivery of new products for the Defender brand specifically designed for the US market.” The current-generation Defender launched in 2020, so this collaboration could mean the two automakers jointly develop the next-generation Defender, to be built in a Stellantis plant in the US, around 2028.

We’ve tried to get the PR team to confirm this, but they say it’s too early to talk specifics. “The next step is a feasibility study,” they say.

The fact that Eberhardt will stay for several months to work as a consultant while Stellantis and JLR move forward together suggests he helped cook up the deal in the first place. That would make sense, given his Chrysler and DaimlerChrysler roots.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

We don’t know exactly why Joe Eberhardt is leaving JLR. At the age of 62, the German-born executive could have retired or focused on his teaching position as an adjunct professor of marketing at the NYU Stern School of Business. Was he arguing with his corporate bosses that it was premature to cancel all the internal-combustion models from Jaguar before getting a better foothold in the luxury battery-electric market beyond the i-Pace EV?

Jaguar Land Rover adapted its Electrified Modular Architecture to offer a hybrid version of the latest Defender, in addition to the battery-electric.

Or, was he the architect or a major proponent of a strategy now in question, as the US EV market has gone cold? A person with that much experience building brands would know that it takes years of executing first-rate products and establishing deep connections with loyal customers, and that scrapping what you have is tantamount to forsaking decades of brand heritage. Customers have too many other good options to wait around for Jag to get its act together.
