Ford’s long-discussed affordable electric pickup is starting to feel a lot more real. The automaker has launched a new website dedicated to the development of its upcoming EV truck, giving the public an early look at the prototype, the production process, and the thinking behind what could become one of Ford’s most important electric vehicles yet.
The truck is expected to arrive with a starting price of around $30,000, a figure that instantly makes it stand out in today’s EV market. While full specifications are still under wraps, Ford is positioning this compact electric pickup as the first vehicle built on its new Universal EV platform. That platform is designed to simplify vehicle construction, reduce parts complexity, and help Ford build more affordable electric models across different body styles.
In the first teaser videos, Ford does not reveal the truck completely, but there is enough to get a sense of its proportions. The camouflaged prototype looks closer in spirit to the Maverick than the larger F-150 Lightning, with a compact footprint, a short hood, and a practical bed layout. The prototype is not just sitting under studio lights, either. Ford has shown the truck undergoing cold-weather testing in Northern Michigan, where engineers are working on systems such as stability control, traction control, and electronic power-assisted steering. Those details may not be flashy, but they are the kind of real-world development work that determines whether an affordable EV truck can feel polished, confident, and ready for daily use.
Ford expects the electric pickup to go on sale sometime in 2027, and if the company can hold close to that $30,000 target, it could have a serious opportunity on its hands. The Maverick proved there is strong demand for smaller, more affordable trucks, and an electric version of that formula could attract everyone from first-time truck buyers to commuters who want utility without stepping into a full-size pickup.
