When Jeep updated the midsize Grand Cherokee for 2026, it left two notable versions of the SUV in the past. That changes for 2027, when the off-road–oriented Trailhawk makes its triumphant return, as does the more luxurious (but still rugged) Overland. Changes to the revived models echo those made to the broader GC lineup last year: A new engine, slightly tweaked exterior cosmetics, and a more advanced infotainment system, plus all the expected capability and luxury accouterments the two trim levels imply.
Going Off The Beaten Path

Since its introduction in 2013, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk has represented the midsize SUV’s highest echelon of off-road capability. That remains true of the 2027 model, which joins its lesser siblings with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that’s standard in much of the lineup. The so-called Hurricane is one of the most powerful four-cylinders on the market today, producing a healthy 324 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque thanks to a Maserati-derived Turbulent Jet Ignition system.

Otherwise, the spec chart of the 2027 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk will feel familiar to those who own a 2022–2025 model, which was only offered with the problematic 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain. Jeep’s Quadratrac II four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case is standard, as is a Quadra-Lift air suspension with off-road tuning that provides up to 11.4 inches of ground clearance and makes room for 30.5-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 18-inch wheels – we’d prefer a little more sidewall, to be honest. The Selec-Terrain dynamic management system adds a rock-crawling mode for the Trailhawk, which blunts throttle response for easy going over big obstacles.

2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee First Drive: Proof That Cylinder Count Isn’t Everything
The Hurricane 2.0-liter turbo in the 2026 model makes it America’s first-ever four-cylinder Grand Cherokee, and it works (mostly).
Visually, the Trailhawk differentiates itself from other GCs via its unique front fascia, which opens up a taller approach angle. The matte black hood decal and red accents make a return yet again, as do red-painted front and rear tow hooks and the all-important Trail Rated badge – an honor only bestowed upon Jeep’s best off-roaders once they meet a series of qualifications that include a trip up the Rubicon Trail. Inside, the Trailhawk gets standard black leather upholstery with signature red accent stitching, and the infotainment system receives an off-road page with incline and roll gauges.
We’re a bit worried about Jeep’s use of its Hurricane 4 engine in the Trailhawk, as our first experience with the powertrain left us wishing for a little more consistency between the accelerator pedal and the engine throttle. We’d be concerned that the lag we felt would make tricky off-road situations a challenge, but we’ll have to slip behind the wheel to find out.

Jeeps come in all shape and sizes, and some of the smallest models have had a big impact.
Being The Outdoorsy Type
Although not as hardcore as the Trailhawk, the Grand Cherokee Overland has represented a blend of ruggedness and luxury since its introduction in 2002. A quarter-century later, the latest Overland still promises a few mechanical, cosmetic, and sybaritic upgrades over other GCs, starting with a sophisticated paint scheme including a body-color roof, black rocker panels, and “Silver Silk” bright-finished exterior accents. The 21-inch wheels that come standard on the Overland are probably a bit big for serious off-road work, although they do look good.
Inside, look for Nappa leather with “Overland” embossing on the seatback, plus heated and ventilated front chairs and a heated rear bench. “An-Teak” satin chrome appears on the interior brightwork. Other standard features include a Quadratrac II two-speed transfer case and a robust setup of underbody protection and skid plates. Semi-active damping and a Quadra-Lift air suspension also come standard.

It’s hard not to like Jeep’s latest small crossover, with a torquey and efficient powertrain plus a very solid feel on the road.
CarBuzz Take – Why It’s Important:
Jeep sales have been a bit stagnant of late, and the automaker could help stem the tide by playing true to its roots. Just like the original Grand Cherokee proved it was possible to be both luxurious and comfortable, the Trailhawk and Overland both have those capabilities in spades, and placing them in the lineup – before the end of the year and at an undisclosed price – could be a huge benefit for the automaker as it chases down sales.
