The thought of buying a car in another state might conjure images of lengthy drives, unfamiliar dealerships and paperwork and red tape nightmares. The reality differs from this, however, with the path to purchasing a vehicle from another state being a well-trodden one. For the right buyer, purchasing a vehicle out of state can unlock access to broader inventory, meaningful savings or even incentives that just aren’t available back home.

For example, the Toyota Mirai is only sold in California, but we wouldn’t advise buying it if you live somewhere else, as it requires special refueling stations. So for those wondering “Can I buy a car in another state?” the answer is most certainly yes. The process of buying a car in another state is, in fact, a lot more straightforward than most people would expect. Understanding how this works essentially just requires the buyer to know where the rules differ from a standard in-state purchase.

    Times Have Changed

What has changed in 2026, however, is what the financial landscape around out-of-state purchases looks like. There have been two significant shifts here, namely the elimination of the federal EV tax credit, as well as the introduction of broad auto tariffs. This has essentially rewritten the cost math for buyers looking to purchase out of state, adding in considerations that weren’t even a factor just twelve months ago. Whether or not purchasing a car in another state still makes sense financially depends heavily on what vehicle is being bought, where the buyer lives and which state the vehicle is being bought in. Perhaps the most notable changes here apply to EV buyers, with things looking notably different right now to what they did at the start of 2025.

This article explores the extent to which it may still be beneficial to purchase a vehicle in a different state to that in which one lives, how tariffs have changed, and the effect these changes could have on purchasing decisions. Information is correct at the time of writing.

What Buying A Car Out Of State Actually Involves

How does buying a car out of state actually work? When it comes to the actual purchasing of a vehicle out of state, the mechanics involved in the transaction are consistent, regardless of which two states are involved, often being a lot less complicated than most buyers might anticipate. You can read the full breakdown in our main guide to buying a car out of state, but the core principles are as follows: sales tax is to be paid based on where you intend on registering the vehicle and not where you purchase it, meaning that your home state’s rate will be owed, regardless of where the sales transaction has taken place.

Temporary registration is typically handled by the selling dealership, who will issue the purchaser with a transit tag that will allow the vehicle to be driven home legally in the interim while the permanent plates are being processed. Following this, title transfer will take place in line with the laws of the buyer’s home state once the vehicle has arrived.

This tends to get more complicated, however, when dealing with private sellers. While a dealership tends to handle most of the paperwork automatically, a private seller does not, thus leaving the buyer responsible for obtaining the transit permit, completing an odometer disclosure statement, verifying the title and, in many states, scheduling an inspection of the VIN once the vehicle arrives in its new home state.

Perhaps the most significant and consequential change for out-of-state buyers in 2026 is the removal of the federal EV tax credit. The ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act,’ which was signed into law in July 2025, effectively removed the $7,500 new vehicle credit, as well as the $4,000 used vehicle credit for all EVs purchased after September 30th 2025. For buyers who may have previously crossed state lines in order to access point-of-sale credit at participating dealerships, the federal credit is no longer available and no longer applies, regardless of where the purchase transaction takes place.

Local Car Dealers Beware: Buyers Are Going Out-Of-State For Better Prices

Experian’s latest sales data finds price-weary shoppers willing to drive hundreds of miles for everything from mainstream cars to exotics.

At the same time, the same legislation introduced a new deduction for buyers of American-assembled vehicles, including EVs, hybrid, and gas models that undergo final assembly domestically. What this means for buyers is that, regardless of the state in which they decide to purchase their vehicle, the deduction follows the buyer and, as such, no cross-border implications are carried, so long as the vehicle qualifies for the deduction.

Which EV Incentives Are Now Worth Crossing Borders For?

Now that the federal EV credit has been removed, state-level incentives have become the primary financial variable for those looking to buy an EV. The variation between states is now also significant enough to justify out-of-state purchases depending on the states in question. For example, New Mexico’s Clean Car Tax Credit can offer up to $3,000 against the purchase of a new EV right throughout 2026, and $2,500 on pre-owned EVs. In New York, the Drive Clean Rebate program can reduce the cost of a new EV by up to $2,000 depending on range and sticker price and in Colorado, despite having reduced their credit from $3,500 to just $750 in 2026, additional credits are offered for vehicles that cost less than $35,000.

In short, for a buyer that lives in a state where there is no incentive to purchase an EV, and there are many of those, the reasoning for driving or flying to a neighboring state that has a significant rebate program could make more financial sense than what it did when the federal credit was equally available to everyone. The most important step here is to confirm that the incentive applies to out-of-state buyers at the point of sale due to the fact that some state programs require in-state residency for buyers to qualify. The best way to be sure is to check directly with the relevant state’s energy or transportation department before concluding a purchase.

How Tariffs Have Affected New Car Prices Across State Lines

While purchasing a vehicle out of state may have once seemed like an attractive endeavor to pursue, the 25% tariff that was introduced in 2025 on imported vehicles has had somewhat of a flattening effect on the price differences between those vehicles. A 4–8% price increase across all vehicles as a result of tariff policy was projected by Cox Automotive analysts, with imported vehicles seeing a cost impact of around $5,500. Even US-assembled models have seen increases of around $1,000, largely due to tariffs that have been imposed on foreign-sourced components.

“Simply being the ‘local’ dealer doesn’t mean buyers will accept higher prices, even if local competition is slim.”

Practically, models that contain significant levels of import content – predominantly mainstream non-US brands – see dealers in different states working from more of a uniform base than before the tariffs were put in place. The days of finding a significantly cheaper imported model two states across are by and large over. However, models with predominantly domestic assembly and production might still see out-of-state buying advantages with dealer competition and regional inventory levels allowing for there to still be variation in pricing.

    The New Domestic Assembly Deduction

    Ford Expedition ProductionFord

The ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ contains a provision that equally benefits both out-of-state and home-state buyers and that is the new deduction for vehicles with domestic final assembly. What’s great is that this deduction is available across gas, hybrid and electric vehicles and is not tied to the state of purchase. This makes the deduction relevant to any buyer with the intention of purchasing a domestically assembled car out of state.

The automaker will sell its Chinese-built Lincoln Nautilus from existing stockpiles until the 2026 model year changeover.

One important thing to consider is that income caps are applicable. The full deduction is available to filers under $100,000 and joint filers under $200,000, with there being a phase-out range of up to $150,000 and $250,000, respectively. If you plan to buy a car in another state, it would be prudent to confirm whether a specific vehicle qualifies for this by checking the vehicle’s VIN against the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s assembly database before concluding a purchase.

Is Buying A Car Out Of State Still Worth It In 2026?

Ford Dealership Offering Employee Pricing Amid TariffsFord

There is no straight answer here, so in a word: sometimes. Previously, there were broad cost advantages to purchasing a vehicle out of state. However, interstate price differences on many models have been compressed by tariffs and the cross-border incentive that the federal EV credit offered is no longer available. There are still three valid reasons to consider out-of-state purchases, though.

The first reason is inventory, where it would make sense to purchase a vehicle out of state in the event that you are unable to find the spec or model that you might be looking for in your home state, be it a special edition, something that is high in demand or perhaps part of a limited production run. The second would be EV incentives, where buyers of EVs whose home states offer little to no benefit in purchasing an EV, yet neighboring states might offer not insignificant rebates. The third reason is the price competition on domestically assembled models where variation created by dealer dynamics can be taken advantage of by well-researched buyers.
