    • CATL remained China’s largest power battery maker in May, though its share edged down 0.51 percentage points from April.
    • LG Energy Solution’s share of the ternary battery market rebounded to 11.47% from 3.02% in April, reclaiming the No. 2 spot in the segment.

    CATL (HKEX: 3750) maintained its dominance in China’s electric vehicle (EV) battery market last month, while South Korea’s LG Energy Solution staged a strong comeback in the ternary battery segment.

    CATL’s power battery installations in May were 33.08 GWh, ranking first in the overall market with a 46.14% share, according to data released by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA) on Thursday.

    That share, however, was down 0.51 percentage points from 46.64% in April.

    BYD (HKEX: 1211) ranked second with installations of 11.87 GWh, taking a 16.56% market share, down 0.27 percentage points from 16.83% in April.

    Gotion High-tech (SZSE: 002074) stayed in third place with installations of 4.44 GWh and a 6.19% share, though its share slipped 0.31 percentage points from April.

    CALB (HKEX: 3931) and Eve Energy (SZSE: 300014) ranked fourth and fifth, with installations of 4.30 GWh and 3.23 GWh, corresponding to shares of 5.99% and 4.50%, respectively.

    Among the top 10, Sunwoda (SZSE: 300207) was the local player with the biggest share gain. Its installations in May were 2.21 GWh, with its share rising 0.68 percentage points from April to 3.08%, putting it in eighth place.

    LG Energy Solution was the only foreign company in the top 10. Its installations in May were 1.54 GWh, with its share jumping 1.58 percentage points from April to 2.14%, ranking 10th.

    In the ternary power battery segment, CATL’s installations in May were 9.96 GWh, giving it a 74.36% share. While still far in the lead, that share fell sharply by 8.16 percentage points from 82.52% in April.

    LG Energy Solution, meanwhile, staged a dramatic rebound in the segment. Its ternary battery installations in May were 1.54 GWh, with its share surging 8.46 percentage points to 11.47% from 3.02% in April, returning to second place in the segment.

    Svolt Energy ranked third in the ternary market with installations of 1.01 GWh and a 7.55% share.

    In the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery market, CATL’s installations were 23.12 GWh, with its share rising 1.18 percentage points from April to 39.66%, further extending its lead.

    BYD took a 20.37% share of the LFP market with installations of 11.87 GWh, edging down 0.30 percentage points from April.

    Gotion ranked third with installations of 4.43 GWh and a 7.60% share.

    China’s power battery market continued its overall growth momentum in May. Installations in the month reached 71.9 GWh, up 25.9% year-on-year and 15.2% from April, marking the second straight month of expansion.

    LFP batteries accounted for 81.2% of the domestic market in May, maintaining their dominance.

    In the first 5 months of 2026, China’s power battery installations totaled 259.1 GWh, up 7.3% from the same period in 2025.

    China’s EV battery installations reached 71.9 GWh in May, with LFP batteries taking an 81.2% market share.
