It’s been three years since we brought you this list of the best SUVs of 2023, based on a multitude of scoring metrics designed to identify models that stand out from the pack. The Cadillac Lyriq, Genesis GV70, and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid all had strong showings, as did multiple Volvo SUVs.
Below, we’re checking in on our most-recommended SUVs of 2023 to see where they’re at today, what you’ll pay for one now that someone else has absorbed the delivery charge and initial depreciation costs, and just how cheap some of the hottest electric SUV options of 2023 have become today. We’ll also identify important updates to some of the models below applied after the 2023 model year, which may or may not be worth stretching your budget a little to go up a model year or two on the second-hand ladder.

The all-electric Cadillac Lyriq initially hit the road for the 2023 model year, after pre-orders opened in 2022. The initial rollout was slow and consisted largely of first-edition models, with more trim grades added as the 2024’s arrived. Base pricing was $61,795 with rear-drive, and $63,795 with AWD. The Lyriq was one of the highest-ranked SUVs on our 2023 list, a real ‘best of the best’ product that represented a fresh new entry to the luxury EV scene and brought impressive high-tech driver assists along for the ride.
From its opening price in the low-to-mid sixties, a three-year-old copy today will average an ask of around $37,000, as EV resale values slip fast. After three years on sale, features, wheels, colors, and trim grades were updated, and the suite of safety and driver assist systems gained additional functionalities. Still, the Cadillac Lyriq’s core platform remained the same, so a 2023 Lyriq is a great way to pay about half the price of a 2026 model year unit, which delivers basically the same driving experience.

The plug-in T8 hybrid variant of the Volvo XC90 first arrived in 2016 on the second-generation platform. This was one of our most highly rated SUVs of 2023, primarily thanks to an example-setting suite of safety features and a recent update that made the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain even more appealing with more power and all-electric range. The elegant interior and comfortable, engaging ride didn’t hurt, either.
In 2023, you’d pay $71,900 for starters and $79,900 for a decked-out unit in the ‘Ultimate’ trim grade. All-electric range was up 10 miles because of this upgrade, too. The major powertrain update, which included an upgraded storage battery and rear axle motor, was the big news for the 2023 model year. Since then, changes have been mostly incremental updates to the XC90’s tech and safety suite. Today, three years later, pricing is hovering around the $45,000 mark, potentially saving second-hand shoppers $30,000 after just three years.

The fourth and current-generation Hyundai Tucson was the first to offer hybrid power when it launched in 2022. Pricing ran from $31,350 for a base-model hybrid to $37,660 for a top-line Limited.
An update was applied for the 2025 model year, improving the cabin, styling, and safety technology, while also enhancing trim grade availability. Bigger screens and a more logical center stack were in the spotlight, as well as more convenient storage facilities and a better-placed smartphone charging pad. If these upgrades don’t matter much to you, then consider used pricing for 2023 model year units today, which is hovering around $25,000. Big demand for Hyundai’s hybrid offerings carries into 2026, showing there’s plenty of demand for hybrids in the mainstream space and helping keep prices up.

If you’re willing to forego those upgrades, a 2023 model year unit could save you heaps of cash. Today, you’ll have no trouble picking one up for $30,000 or less, though the high-performing GT variation costs more. On any EV6, double-check to confirm you’ve got enough front and rear-seat headroom, and give the touch controls a good workout to make sure you’re able to use them with ease.

At that point, two years into production, the 2023 Mustang Mach-E cost around $43,000 to $57,000 for mainstream models, with the high-performance Mach-E GT topping the range at $60,000.
Today, you’ll pay less than half that amount for a second-hand copy, with crushing EV depreciation bringing average prices today down to well under $30,000. Improvements from 2024 to 2026 brought updated charging, software, and performance tweaks, though the underlying machine and its driving experience remained virtually unchanged.

In 2023, the Volvo XC40 was the automaker’s base-level SUV, and came in both standard and electric (Recharge) configurations. Space, safety, and style earned both XC40 configurations a place on our list, partially thanks to a new mild-hybrid gas engine on gas-powered models, and the tremendous 402-horsepower punch from the all-electric Recharge version.
In 2023, you’d be paying $53,550 for a base-model XC40 Recharge, with the top-line ‘Ultimate’ trim taking this EV to $59,500. Gas-powered units with the new mild-hybrid engine were cheaper, starting at $36,350 and topping out at $46,500. Today, the values of both gas-powered XC40s and electric-powered XC40 Recharge models from 2023 are hovering around $31,000, regardless of the powertrain.
