Audi is facing growing scrutiny after a class-action lawsuit was filed alleging serious defects in the water pump systems used in the automaker’s EA839 2.9-liter and 3.0-liter V6 engines. First reported by CarComplaints.com and mentioned by multiple sources like Car and Driver, the lawsuit claims Audi knowingly sold vehicles with faulty cooling system components that could lead to coolant leaks, expensive repairs, and possible engine damage across several high-volume models sold between the 2018 and 2024 model years.

The lawsuit, officially titled Larr, et al., v. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., et al., was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and covers a broad list of Audi vehicles equipped with the EA839 engine family. Affected models named in the complaint include the A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q7, Q8, SQ5, S6, S7, RS5, and additional variants spanning multiple production years. According to the report from CarComplaints.com, plaintiffs argue Audi had prior knowledge of the alleged defect through customer complaints, dealership repair records, warranty claims, and technical service information but failed to properly notify owners or issue a permanent fix.

Lead plaintiff Doug Larr claims he purchased a used 2019 Audi A6 in 2021 and later experienced coolant leakage tied to the water pump system. Court filings state that after the vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic in 2026, repairs involving the water pump, PCV valve, and vacuum hose system totaled nearly $6,000 because the vehicle was no longer under warranty. Another plaintiff, Kaelin Crawford, reportedly experienced similar issues that also resulted in substantial out-of-pocket repair costs. The allegations paint a frustrating picture for owners who believed they were purchasing premium luxury vehicles with long-term reliability.

The lawsuit arrives during an otherwise positive period for Audi, which has recently generated excitement around future products like the upcoming Q9 and its expanding Formula 1 involvement. Still, legal challenges tied to reliability concerns can quickly overshadow product momentum, especially in the luxury segment where customer expectations remain high. As of now, Audi has not publicly detailed its response to the lawsuit, but affected owners across the country will likely be paying close attention to see whether the company offers reimbursement programs, warranty extensions, or additional support if the case progresses further.
