Toyota apparently thinks its full-size Sequoia could use a little more dirt on its tires, and we’re certainly not going to argue with that. For 2027, the big three-row SUV receives a welcome collection of upgrades, including refreshed styling, improved technology, and a greater emphasis on off-road capability. The biggest news is the introduction of a new Trailhunter package, joining an upgraded TRD Pro model to give adventure-minded buyers two different ways to get off the beaten path. Toyota is also making some meaningful improvements to towing technology, further strengthening the Sequoia’s reputation as a capable family hauler that can handle more than just the daily school run.

The new Sequoia Trailhunter package is based on the SR5 trim and brings genuine off-road hardware rather than simply adding rugged-looking accessories. Upgrades include an Old Man Emu suspension system, underbody skid plates, front recovery hooks, and Michelin LTX Trail tires mounted on distinctive bronze-finished wheels. Toyota also includes a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, and Multi-Terrain Select to help drivers navigate challenging terrain. Starting at $75,595, including destination, the Trailhunter offers a more affordable alternative to the TRD Pro while emphasizing overlanding and exploring remote trails. We particularly like that Toyota is giving buyers a factory-equipped off-road option without requiring them to jump straight into the more expensive performance-oriented trim.

Speaking of the TRD Pro, Toyota has made some worthwhile improvements for 2027. The biggest upgrade is a new set of Sequoia-specific FOX QS3 adjustable shocks designed to improve suspension control across different driving conditions, particularly when traveling quickly over rough terrain. The TRD Pro also features 18-inch forged BBS wheels, standard red recovery hooks, and an eye-catching new Honeycomb exterior color. Elsewhere, the entire Sequoia lineup receives a refreshed front end with a wider-looking design, revised lower bumper, new rectangular fog lights, and updated grille treatments. Under the hood, the familiar i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain carries over, combining a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 with an electric motor to produce 437 horsepower and an impressive 583 lb-ft of torque. Maximum towing capacity remains a substantial 9,520 pounds when properly equipped.

Toyota hasn’t overlooked everyday convenience, either. The 2027 Sequoia introduces upgraded towing assistance features, including automated trailer detection, trailer blind-spot monitoring, trailer lane-tracing assistance, and an improved trailer backup guide designed to make maneuvering large trailers easier. Inside, the SUV benefits from Toyota’s latest multimedia technology, an available 14-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an integrated Drive Recorder dash camera. Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is also standard, bringing updated driver-assistance technology across the lineup. These improvements should make the Sequoia more appealing to families who regularly tow boats, campers, or recreational equipment while still wanting modern comfort and safety features.

Pricing for the 2027 Toyota Sequoia starts at $72,095 for the SR5, including destination, while the Limited begins at $77,695 and the Platinum comes in at $85,595. The Western-inspired 1794 Edition starts at $86,595, followed by the upgraded TRD Pro at $88,120 and the range-topping Capstone at $90,095. From our perspective, the new Trailhunter package is probably the most interesting addition, especially for buyers who want the Sequoia’s generous passenger space and towing capability with some genuine off-road credentials. The updated TRD Pro also makes a stronger case for itself with its improved suspension hardware. While these changes don’t amount to a complete redesign, they give Toyota’s largest SUV more personality and capability in a segment where buyers increasingly expect their family vehicles to double as weekend adventure machines.
