Gas prices are constantly fluctuating these days, and nobody enjoys spending their hard-earned cash at the pump. And while electric vehicles (EVs) like the Nissan Leaf grab plenty of headlines, not everyone wants to deal with charging stations or range anxiety. That is where fuel-efficient hybrid cars step in to save the day.

The information in this article was correct at the time of writing and sourced directly from the respective manufacturers. Where an image of an exact trim is unavailable, an image from the range is used as representation.

    2027 Honda Prelude Hybrid

    Combined Economy: 44 MPG

Sports coupes and fuel economy rarely belong in the same sentence, yet the revived 2027 Honda Prelude flips that script completely. While a two-door coupe would not normally make a top-10 list for the best mpg hybrid, Honda borrowed the proven gas-electric setup straight from the Civic Hybrid to make it happen. Under the hood sits a 2.0L four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, sending 200 horsepower to the front wheels.

The new Prelude may not be exactly what you expected, but it’s more interesting than you think, if you give it a chance.

Instead of guzzling premium fuel for the sake of sporty looks, the Prelude runs on regular unleaded and achieves an EPA-estimated 46 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway. The electric motor handles most of the low-speed work, which lets the gas engine rest in traffic. Even with a modest 10.6-gallon fuel tank, you can still cover more than 460 miles before needing a fill-up.

    9

    2026 Lexus ES Hybrid 350e

    Combined Economy: 46 MPG

Luxury sedans are usually heavy, thirsty machines, which makes the redesigned 2026 Lexus ES lineup such a pleasant surprise. If you are hunting for the best gas mileage hybrid with a luxury badge on the grille, the front-wheel-drive ES hybrid – badged as the ES 350h in showrooms alongside its all-electric 350e sibling – hits an impressive 46 MPG combined. That breaks down to 48 MPG around town and 44 MPG on the open highway.

Lexus pulled this off by pairing a 2.5L four-cylinder engine with an updated electric motor to produce 244 horsepower. That is plenty of punch without the fuel penalty of an old-school V6. Better yet, you get whisper-quiet cabin insulation, heated and ventilated front seats, and a massive 14-inch touchscreen as standard equipment. Opting for all-wheel drive only drops your combined rating by 2 MPG.

    8

    2026 Honda Accord EX-L Hybrid

    Combined Economy: 48 MPG

Within the 2026 Honda Accord lineup, the EX-L is easily the best mileage hybrid you can buy, beating the flashier Sport and Touring models by 4 MPG. The secret comes down to wheel size: the EX-L rolls on lighter 17-inch alloy wheels rather than heavy 19-inch rims, which reduces rolling resistance so that the car works less to stay moving.

Thanks to that smart setup, the 204-horsepower 2.0L hybrid system delivers 51 MPG in the city and 44 MPG on the highway. You are not roughing it on the inside, either. The EX-L comes kitted with leather seats, parking sensors, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Pair its 48 MPG combined rating with its 12.8-gallon fuel tank, and you can theoretically get over 610 miles of driving range on a single fill-up.

    7

2027 Honda Civic Sedan Sport Hybrid

    Combined Economy: 49 MPG

The 2027 Honda Civic Sedan Sport Hybrid throws compromise out the window. Not only is it the most fuel-efficient hybrid in Honda’s current showroom, but it is also quicker to 60 mph from a standstill than the sporty, gas-only Civic Si. Its 2.0L engine and dual electric motors team up for 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque.

Around town, the Civic Sedan Sport Hybrid hits 50 MPG, while highway cruising returns a sturdy 47 MPG. Because the sedan body slices through the air more cleanly than the hatchback version, it squeezes an extra mile per gallon from its fuel load.

    6

    2027 Kia Niro Hybrid LX

    Combined Economy: 50 MPG

If you want crossover utility without paying the usual SUV tax at the gas station, the 2027 Kia Niro Hybrid LX is the answer. Standing taller than a traditional sedan, it gives you easy step-in height and nearly 22 cubic feet of cargo room behind the back seats. Despite that boxy, practical shape, it still cracks the 50 MPG combined mark.

Under the hood, a 1.6L four-cylinder engine and electric motor produce a modest 139 horsepower. It will not win any drag races, taking nearly nine seconds to reach 60 mph, but it feels natural on the road thanks to a six-speed automatic transmission that shifts gears like a regular car. With an 11.1-gallon tank, you can easily cruise past 550 miles between gas refuels.

    5

    2027 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE

    Combined Economy: 50 MPG

The 2027 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE remains one of the smartest buys on the market. Starting right around $25,000, it is the most affordable entry point into gas-electric driving in America, meaning you start pocketing real fuel savings from day one rather than paying off a massive sticker price.

Power comes from a simple, proven 1.8L four-cylinder hybrid system making 138 horsepower. It shines brightest in heavy city traffic, where the electric motor takes the brunt of stop-and-go driving to help deliver its 50 MPG combined rating. Toyota also packs in standard adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and wireless smartphone connectivity. If you want it, Toyota also offers all-wheel drive as an option.

An all-new Toyota Corolla is coming to market in 2028.

    4

    2027 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Blue

    Combined Economy: 51 MPG

Most hybrids work best crawling through city traffic and lose efficiency once you hit 70 mph on the interstate. The 2027 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Blue flips that formula on its head. While it manages a very respectable 47 MPG in town, its highway rating jumps to a whopping 56 MPG, resulting in 51 MPG combined.

Unlike rivals that use gearless transmissions that can drone during hard acceleration, the Sonata pairs its 192-horsepower 2.0L hybrid setup with a six-speed automatic. Inside, there is a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen and generous legroom. Combine its 13.2-gallon fuel tank with that highway efficiency, and you are looking at nearly 675 miles of combined driving range before the low-fuel light ever blinks on.

    3

    2027 Toyota Camry LE

    Combined Economy: 51 MPG

Toyota made a bold move with the latest Camry by dropping gas-only engines entirely, turning America’s favorite midsize sedan into a hybrid-only lineup. The base 2027 Camry LE is the mileage king of the bunch, turning in 51 MPG combined thanks to its aerodynamic bodywork and sensible 16-inch alloy wheels. The car pulls off 52 MPG in the city and 49 MPG on the highway.

What really separates the Camry LE from smaller economy cars is how effortless it feels from behind the wheel. Its 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid system produces 225 horsepower in front-wheel-drive form, giving you brisk passing power even with four adults and a full trunk. With a 13-gallon gas tank, you can count on roughly 660 miles of total range, alongside standard blind-spot monitoring and dual-zone climate control.

    Expert
    insight

We could find nothing to fault with the new Camry. In town, it’s easy to maneuver accurately, and on the freeway, it was smooth sailing all the way.

    2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue

    Combined Economy: 54 MPG

If your daily routine involves racking up endless highway miles on a tight budget, the 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue deserves a top spot on your shortlist. This compact sedan posts an eye-popping 58 MPG on the highway and 51 MPG in the city, settling at 54 MPG combined. Even with an 11-gallon fuel tank, that translates to an EPA-estimated 594 miles of range per tank.

Like its corporate cousin, the Kia Niro, the Elantra Hybrid uses a 1.6L four-cylinder engine and electric motor good for 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft. Because it uses a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, it avoids the loud engine revving common in other small hybrids. Factor in its roomy back seat, expressive exterior styling, and a starting price under $26,000, and the value math is hard to argue with.

    2027 Toyota Prius Hybrid LE

    Combined Economy: 55 MPG

For over two decades, the Toyota Prius has been the gold standard for penny-pinching at the pump, and the 2027 Prius Hybrid LE keeps that crown firmly in place. Earning up to 55 MPG combined, this sleek hatchback proves you no longer have to drive a slow, awkward-looking science project to get top-tier efficiency.

Better still, Toyota gave the latest Prius a serious shot of adrenaline. Its 2.0L four-cylinder hybrid system produces 194 horsepower in front-wheel-drive trim, cutting its 0-to-60 mph sprint down to around seven seconds – lightyears ahead of older models. With an 11.3-gallon tank delivering over 620 miles of range, plus practical hatchback cargo space and standard wireless phone connectivity, the Prius LE remains the ultimate weapon against high gas prices.
