The Base Price Is Only The Beginning

We added a section discussing the potential cost of optional extras based on existing examples.

The Ferrari Luce has become the most controversial car in recent memory. On paper, it’s spectacular – a five-seater sedan that uses four electric motors to make 1,035 horsepower and designed in collaboration with industrial designer Marc Newson and ex-Apple designer Jony Ive. Visually, though, there has been a lot of criticism, largely based on how it doesn’t look like a Ferrari.

Whatever your opinion, Ferrari claims demand has been exceptional. And now, we finally know how much it’ll cost in the US. Spoiler: It’s cheaper than elsewhere in the world.

The US Seemingly Gets A Hefty Price Cut For A Ferrari

Based on the announced European pricing, the expectation was that the Ferrari Luce would cost around $640,000 in the US based on the exchange rate of 550,000 euros into US dollars. However, Car and Driver has reported the official price stateside is set at $560,800, as confirmed by Ferrari. That’s about $55,000 to $60,000 less than expected, but still putting the Luce up there with the most expensive sedans on the market. Crucially, it’s nearly $100,000 more than the other family-friendly Ferrari, the V12-powered Purosangue (~$438,610).

Why Is The Ferrari Luce Less Expensive In The US?

Given the US currently has heavy tariffs on already expensive importation costs, it would make sense on the surface if the Luce cost more in the US than in Europe. However, as Electrek points out, European car prices are normally quoted with taxes included, and Italy’s tax rate is 22%. The US is a country with a lot of variable taxes from state to state, so tax is nearly always calculated separately.

Assuming tax is included in Ferrari’s European quote and, specifically for Italy, that would put the Luce at €450,800 before tax. That translates to $506,000, making the Ferrari Luce $54,800 more expensive in the US. Here in California, the tax rate on a new car is 7.5 percent, but local government entities may collect additional taxes up to 2.5 percent.

A Ferrari Luce bought in California would have around $56,000 added in tax, making the $560,800 Luce a $616,800 car with tax included, compared to the $640,000 European price including tax.

The Base Price Is Only The Beginning

Taxes won’t be the only thing pushing up the Luce’s price, because you’ve also dealer markups and optional extras to think about. And, of course, options on a vehicle costing north of half a million dollars won’t be cheap by any means, with other Ferrari models providing some clear examples.

For instance, the Purosangue can be had with something called the Design Pack, a series of cosmetic enhancements that’ll set you back around $100k. It’s not at all uncommon for special finishes to command five figures, either, and this basically applies throughout Ferrari’s lineup. So, why would this not be the case with the electric Luce?

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters

Ultimately, we’re talking about a car that costs north of half a million dollars, and for people looking to drop that kind of money on a car, they are not going to be particularly price sensitive. As it stands, Ferrari sold out its initial allocation of just under 500 units in less than two months, with the most buyers being in China. Not only that, but the first production chassis sold for $40 million at a charity auction for the Ferrari Foundation.

The Luce is an incredibly important car for Ferrari, and a marked departure from its usual predominantly gas-powered supercar lineup. It’s also a massive design departure, looking more like an EV startup’s first vehicle than a Ferrari. The Luce’s success or failure will not be based on price, but on whether the Ferrari badge is desirable enough outside its traditional supercar heritage.
